Green filter cleaning advice???

Featured Replies

Got the kit from Halfords but just wondered what you all used to soak the filter in the cleaning fluid?

Did you just put it in or did you use a brush?

I found nothing I could use and be able to sparingly use the cleaning fluid. Which is now why I just use fairy washing up liquid and luke warm water, and a damn good rinse off. I have found brake cleaner to be very effective as well and can be bought in bulk pretty cheap. Ideally you want a green filter shaped tray with a good inch high edge around it. :) That would be the easiest way to soak the filter without wasting much cleaner.

I used an old washing up bowl!

You got the green cotton from Halfrauds?

How much as my local with the performance center said they couldn't get them only K&N.

I use a cat litter tray which is a perfect size and depth :D It should have the instructions on the cleaning kit, but basically:

1) Bang/brush off as much loose dirt as you can.

2) Rinse the filter under cold water and repeat 1).

3) Leave it to soak in a solution of cleaning fluid/warm soapy water for half an hour.

4) Rinse again under the cold tap,

5) Dab dry with some kitchen paper and then leave out to dry naturally.

6) Once it's dry, spray with the oil, leave it 15 mins to soak in and then dab with kitchen paper.

I recently enquired about costs - local messers shop £35, Halfrauds £49.99.

I'm not paying £35 for an air filter :finger:

I got the filter from Jabbasport but I got the filter cleaner kit from Halfords

I use a paint roller tray, shake it to clean out as much as poss, fill the roller tray up with the green filter cleaner to the point where the panel filter is two thirds covered and leave to soak for 15 minutes, after which time I tend to re-do the procedure only using one third cleaner and using a brush to clean out all the left over crap. finally I leave it to dry naturally then evenly respray the filter with the green filter oil (not too much!) and leave it for 5 minutes to dry naturally before putting it back in the airbox and leaving the car for 1 hour before i'd say it's fully soaked through and ready to go.

I have never managed to get it "like new", but i've managed to get it somewhere like. I will probably replace it when the car gets to 60k, then i've had a good 55,000 miles use out of it.

I use an old biscuit tin for the cleaning solution, applied with a B&Q cheapo paintbrush. Surprising how easily the grot comes away.

In between scrubs, the filter gets vacuumed to get rid of flies etc. With monthly vacuuming, it seems to go easily 8 months between scrubs.

Rectangular roasting tray out of tescos for about
