Bad sealings around threshold/doors?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I've had my Karoq for about 14 months now and in february i discovered that the sealing on the driverseat door had broke and started to rust.
The sealing is mounted on a steel frame that is then inserted around the opening and it's the steel frame that started to rust not the car chassie.
It's not super easy to discover since the seal covers this even when it has released from the steelfram.
Anyway, the dealership fixed this without any discussion and changed the sealingframe but now a couple of months later the same thing has happened with the seal on the back door (same side)...
We do use a roofbox during the winter so sometimes we stand on the threshold to reach properly. Not sure if this is what causes it but this is something we have done on every other car we have owned in the past without problems..

Anyone else with this problem? We do use a roofbox during the winter so sometimes we stand on the threshold to reach properly but this is something we have done on every other car we have owned in the past without problems..

I had this on VW T5 van, drivers door was well gone inside 9 months - VW replaced it at 12months but within the next year I noticed it had failed again.

There reason for failure could be something in the standing on the step business, the T5 design meant that the seal was forever being stressed whenever I got in and out.

Skoda have struggled with their door seals for many years across most of their models. For some reason they're unable to design them so that they allow water that enters the seals to drain away freely and as a result water sits inside the seal. Chances are too that during winter the water is salty and isn't able to escape or dry out naturally for months on end.

Are these the only seals you stand on i.e. are the seals on the opposite doors that you don't stand on rust-free? If so then this might suggest that by standing on them you are at least making the situation worse.

I'm not excusing poor design / quality, but past experience would suggest Skoda won't keep replacing them under warranty, it is likely you're going to have to find a solution to prevent the rust occurring, or at least slowing it down. Not the cheapest solution but we have the genuine Skoda running boards fitted to our Kodiaq as we knew we'd struggle to access the roof box without standing on the sills.
