Power steering rack for my fabia YG07DWA

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Hope everyone is coping well with the current lockdown situation.

As the title suggests, my steering rack is leaking from passenger side gaitor and steering is starting to become stiffer and stiffer.

I believe there are 3 or more variations.

Is anyone here kindly able to tell me which one I need or ideally the part number?

Thanks

There are two racks, one is TRW, one is Koyo, yours is likely to be TRW so any TRW rack from a VAG group car based on the Polo 9N platform will work.

Hi there, thanks for getting back so quick.

I did some research and found this to be correct part number TRW JRP 7289.

But looking at this item number on eBay - 133012211521

Do you think it will also fit?

Regards

If it's for a Polo 9N based car and is made by TRW then yes, there are people here with beady eyes and electronic catalogues who will confirm that.

The parts catalogues I usually use are both down at the moment unfortunately.

I believe there are two types of TRW rack which have non-interchangeable steering angle sensor 'targets' in them. So if you get an early rack, you'd need an early sensor to go with it.

This page suggests that that ebay item isn't necessarily going to work with a car later than 2004 https://oemwolf.com/oem-parts/6q2423061g.html (scroll down to near the bottom of the page where it says "Part 6Q2423061G is used and compatible with these Skoda cars", after you've selected Skoda as your brand of interest).  That may be to do with the angle sensor, not sure.

Thanks Wino.

But will the rack not come with angle sensor or is it an add on?

Thanks

Also, I am in Kent near Dartford.

Do you know anyone who can fit it at a reasonable cost as I am not sure how much would the labour be?

Thanks again

There's a visible white plastic cover over the place where it would be fitted, in the second photo in that listing, so no, it won't come with the angle sensor.

Quite a bit of labour time at a garage, I suppose. Maybe someone who's either changed one themselves or paid to have it done can give you some idea.

Is there nothing affordable via searching the TRW number you quoted earlier? (And where did you find that info? Not saying it's wrong, just curious as to how you found that).

Thanks very much Nigel.

Will have to try it when I reach home tonight after work as I don't have VIN information with me.

Nice one @nige8021, that's the page for a 5J/mk2 Fabia, this is the 6Y/mk1 page:

http://www.oemepc.com/skoda/part_single/catalog/sk/markt/CZ/modell/FAB/year/2007/drive_standart/453/hg_ug/423/subcategory/423040/part_id/2548931/lang/e

Not sure which the OP has, but as he's in the mk1 forum I assumed 6Y.

I just went with the 07 on the reg plate and clicked on the first 07 in the list after the 06 so assumed it was for a MK1 ?

This is for the 06 http://www.oemepc.com/skoda/part_single/catalog/sk/markt/CZ/modell/FAB/year/2006/drive_standart/453/hg_ug/423/subcategory/423040/part_id/2548931/lang/e   might need to verify the PR code though

@Arshwesh In that case, depending on chassis number, one of the last two item (1)s in the link I posted.

Those lists sometimes get the overlapping years in the wrong/illogical order, unhelpfully. (possibly alphabetical order or alphanumeric order I that's a thing). The chassis number dependencies with 5J numbers was the clue.

Thanks a lot to both of you.

I have found a brand new trw on eBay for just under £400

Wow, that's a lot, how fast is the leak on your existing one? Have you topped it up?

I have not tipped it up and leak is fairly small but I have not checked the level.

Will do that tomorrow if weather is still nice.

I dread getting to that reservoir.

Yes even, I don't want to spend that much too be honest as there is no overtime at work at the moment either lol

At least, I would be able to use my existing angle sensor.

With regards to the leak - it does not drip down on the floor just yet.

But I have a feeling that the gaiter is holding a fair bit in it.

Member @TMB found such a leak on his car a while back, and as far as I know, it continues to serve him well with just topping up.  Not ideal, obviously, but pragmatic and massively money-saving...

I may try that , don't have anything to lose I suppose.

I have had it moted just before lockdown anyways.

Thanks  again Wino

Yes, the level has never dropped again since then! Must have been weeping for years.
