Hi Wino / TMB,

Thanks for the pictures TMB.

Will this power steering fluid be ok or do I have to go to dealers to get one?

Please see the link.

Thanks

I know that some people will say "its only power steering fluid for goodness sake!"  - but as you have asked the question, what you linked to quotes VW TL52146, what VW Group advise is VW G002 000 and maybe that has now evolved into VW G004 000.

I have just looked on an old tin of VW G002 000 and there is no reference to any other VW specs anywhere on that 2004 tin. (I should dump it I suppose as it is nearly empty and my only car that uses it is not leaking - at the moment!).

Try looking online for either of the 2 VW specs I have listed above if you are keen to get what VW Group says should be in that system.

Edit:- I've just checked online and both the VW specs that I've mentioned are included with the one you mentioned in the description for some power steering fluid brands - which means that it should be okay if that info is correct, you should also check to make sure yourself.

Another Edit:- there is someone online selling this cheaper -  https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/oen/g002000

Thanks guys - I managed to get it from motorline Skoda in Dartford - genuine vw G004 000.

now I am removing the battery, but having a little struggle - do I need to remove fuse box assembly as it's sort of coming in the way.

i have undone the negative , positive terminal and also the 13mm nut that holds it to the clamp.

thanks guys

I can't remember exactly how it goes, but there's a knack to getting the battery box out which I only realised after I'd gone a long way down the route of taking more than I needed to apart.  Sorry, not a huge help, but hopefully someone else will chime in with better info?

Actually, got a photo of the fuse stuff? I think if it's the later style, doesn't it just unclip in two or three places from the base of the battery holder?

Hi Wino,

Just took everything apart and surprise surprise, fluid reservoir is completely empty- ie bone dry.

Gonna let the car cool down completely, then will top it up tomorrow.

Thank you

Fingers crossed for at least temporary relief from the problem.

Hi Wino and other guys,

I topped it up on Tuesday and test drove it  - it drove fine.

And I have been driving it since. Steering feels like as it should.

I did not change the gaiters unfortunately as I am trying to find out at this stage how slow/fast the leak is.

But either way - will get the gaiters done in near future. I will keep you guys updated.

And once again thanks very much for all the help and advice.

Regards

Just an update for all the guys who contributed to this thread- sepulchrave and wino and TMB to name a few. Thanks for all the advice given.

As per advice given, I had filled up the power steering reservoir (which was completely empty) on 12/05  and have been driving since.

Now, one month has gone and power steering has been fine. No leak underneath the car but I have not had it on the ramps.

I will check the level of power steering fluid in a few days when I get a chance to see how much has it dropped.
