Octavia VRS mk2 2011 FL timing chain issues

Featured Replies

Hello,

I Read that the FL mk2 VRS TSI can suffer from timing chain causing major issues. At what year did skoda start fitting the revised more reliable timing chain tensioners etc.

Many thanks.

Latest revision was after 2015 at some point IIRC, but happy for someone to correct me.

This has been covered many many times and is in the sticky at the top of these threads.  I'm not aware the situation has changed recently. My belief is the latest revision tensioner is K beyond the end of first qtr 2012 and Chain AD, beyond end of 3rd qtr 2014. Calendar qtrs that is.

Sorry if I didn't explain proper.

I believe the 200bhp tsi ccza engines had timing chain tensioner issues 2009-2012. Did skoda change the tensioner to the more reliable one within 2009-2012 or did they remain the same.

Sorry if i'm not making sense haha, but I appreciate your help.

My last car was a 2011 Octavia TSI VRS FL. From all the good info I read on this site, Skoda changed to a far more reliable tensioner in the middle of 2012. I was not going to take the risk of mine failing and blowing the engine, so a bit of preventative maintenance was required. I took the car to my excellent independant garage and had them fit new timing chains and tensioner. Cost was around £600. Fitted around 50k miles and was no problem when I sold the car at over 100k miles. Piece of mind was a wonderful thing, rather than leave it and with bad luck, bang goes the engine.

Thank you and some good advice! how was the car in general?

The car was great, as you can see below I have bought another VRS, so I must love them. The last one had a few mods,  suspension, exhaust, stage one remap etc. The next owner would have got a great motor, although I don't know who that is, as I traded it into a Skoda garage for the one I own now. If your car has even a hint of a momentary rattle on start up, get the tensioner done as soon as possible.

Very great value for money in my opinion, thank you again!

All the information is in my reply to you. 2012 for both the chain and the tensioner, different months though.  That is a part list for CCZA timing gear!

Anything before current revisions is potentially unreliable.  Even latest tensioners are not an amazing piece of engineering but have proved reliable based on feedback I've seen. And it is what I have in my car. I wouldn't feel happy about the risk of turning the key one morning and munching the engine.

I see, yeah would be the wise thing to do. It’s a shame that they are a downfall to such a good potential engine.

What price would you expect to pay to replace it?

If you are talking about the cost of replacing chains and tensioner, see one of my earlier posts where I mentioned how much it was on mine.

I've been quoted something silly like £1200 and £800 around london.
If you want to keep the car definitely change it. I waited and it bit me hard with a chain slip. Car spent the better half of 3 months at the garage.

Sorry I was correct in my first reply. As you would see by the product code chronology. 2014 for the latest chain! Now, even I'm getting confused and I've had my timing gear replaced already!

If your anywhere near Bedfordshire aks tuning seem to have it listed for under £400. Or though it does state "tfsi"

Apologies for bumping this old thread but looking for some clarity.

I'm on the verge of purchasing a 2010 FL VRS which had a new engine put in during August 2015 and this was done by Skoda under warranty. Would I be right in assuming that at this time it would have been done with the revised tensioners and so no need to worry?
