Clutch / Gearbox issue

Featured Replies

I have a 2017 Yeti and took it out for a long run today after being stood for 7 weeks and getting the car into gear is proving really difficult The issue got worse the further I drove.

if the car is stationary with the engine off , I can move through the gears relatively easy.  But once the engine is running selecting gears in nigh on impossible.

the car was due to go in for a service and brake fluid change at the beginning of April but due to the lockdown and the dealership being closed this is on hold.

i have checked brake/clutch fluid level and it looks ok.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can check

Hi Davemc67

It sounds like you are suffering from clutch drag.  The surface of the flywheel and the pressure plate may have a thin film of rust after standing idle, which prevents the clutch from fully disengaging.  It's a bit like how brake discs rust after the car hasn't been used.

Try putting the car into 2nd gear at standstill with the handbrake firmly on, rev the engine a bit and gently ease up on the clutch pedal until you hear the revs drop.  Keep it there for 2 or 3 seconds.  This procedure will help polish off the rust.

Alternatively, you may just find that the rust clears naturally after you have driven for a while, especially if you can manage a few hill starts which will have the same effect as above.

Agreed although usually it manifests itself as a stuck rather than a dragging clutch.

I gave that a try and it doesn’t seem any better .. it will eventually go if you push against the gate really hard

its easy to put it in reverse but takes some effort to get it out of reverse

Dont continue pushing hard against the gate, you are pushing the synchromesh cone hard against the rotating constant mesh gear which will wear it out in short order.

You need to investigate the clutch drag, possibly a hydraulic problem although just as expensive labour wise as a clutch change if its the concentric slave cylinder leaking.

Latest is the Yeti has been in for its service and brake fluid change and they saying that it sounds like the clutch is worn from heavy use

£324 to strip the gearbox down, + cost of parts (unknown how much or what’s needed so couldn’t give me a ball park figure) + the cost of putting everything back together probably another £324

now not sure whether to get them to do it seeing as the earliest they can get me booked in is July 12th and no courtesy car as their are none available until 27th July  or take it somewhere else

If they say its caused by the clutch being worn why are they quoting to strip the gearbox down?

Sorry Urrell .. got mixed up the £324 was just to remove the gearbox not strip it down

Why itemise £324 to remove the gearbox when its a clutch change?

Did they not quote for clutch replacement, or is that their way of breaking the job down to maximise profits.

What they said was that’s how much it would cost to remove the gearbox to find out what’s wrong, then the cost of parts and then the cost to put it all back together again.

like you say breaking it down to maximise profits

ive decided to take it else where, and get them to take a look

Well seems I know know what happened to my clutch .

As a friend says ~ "Crikey!"

At least the diaphragm spring looks in one piece, that normally takes out the gearbox.

I think I was lucky as the flywheel wasn’t damaged either ..ended up costing me £450 all In to get it stripped down and clutch replaced ..god only how much it would have been at the main dealers

Genuine question: What causes something like that?

Seen it a few times on landrovers where they’ve been slipping the clutch and dropping it at high revs trying to get out of a hole or towing something way too heavy and overheating the clutch.

Wow! I spent 38 years in Daily Rental and have seen many damaged clutches but NEVER a shattered cover plate. One company overloaded their van with printed paper and the clutch came out looking like black shredded wheat.

The garage said due to the car standing for 3 months while I was shielding this had seized to the shaft and when I drove it that when it happened when I was trying to get it into gear

That is probably the last thing I think that would have caused it.
