P0221 - 2009 2.0 TSI vRS?

Featured Replies

Hullo all.

Got a 2.0 petrol vRS, 2009 LE model, which I think means EA888/ CCZA engine?

Its got an intermittent fault where it will bring the EPC light on and go into limp mode. Reading the codes brings back P0221 which I understand to be throttle sensor.

Tried the reset procedure to no avail. Sometimes it will fix itself as soon as I move, sometimes it will stay on for a while. Sometimes a Carista reset works, sometimes it comes straight back.

I've seen reference to a repair to the wiring harness on Golfs and other VWs of the same engine, which I am willing to try - just wondering of anyone has had the same, as my local Skoda dealer says they've never heard of it on the Octavias...?

I had this happen many years ago, and a throttle body alignment through vag com did the trick.

If I remember rightly when I got home I had all the connectors off and gave them a good clean with some electrical contact cleaner and it never happened again.... until yesterday funnily enough, started the car up after replacing the AC Condenser and it was running like a dog throwing up this code... same again vag com throttle body alignment and all seems well again now.

Have heard of the wiring damage / repair you mention but haven't looked into it much to be honest.

I also have a 2009 vrs TSI and the same problem has been causing me serious grief since I got the car. I've had one mechanic tell me it was a loose connection between coil pack and plug. I've had another mechanic tell me it was a kinked hose. The dealer has also sent me a replacement throttle body which I haven't got round to fitting yet. Very frustrating as I havnt had the car long and I enjoy it when she is going.

This is also intermittent in my case although my code is slightly different p0121.

I honestly have lost faith in anyone being able to sort this issue. Next port for me is to change throttle body and see what happens.

Keep me posted on your issue

There is reference to a wiring repair in North American Region vehicles.  Doesn't seem to apply to Europe.  Still, Maybe worth looking at the technical bulletin to see if you think it could be a solution. Otherwise, check wiring continuity or replace throttle body control unit which maybe only available with the whole throttle body?

I haven't noticed anyone posting this sort of fault on here in the last 4 years I've been here.

PS a full scan and an output test of the Throttle body (if available) on VCDS not a bad idea before splashing cash.

Just an update on this. I work odd shifts so apologies for the delay... dropped it at my tame mechanic who did a bit of research and diagnosed it as the throttle pedal with associated electronickery. Nine million pounds for the new part, now fitted. Will see how it goes and if it solves it. Apparently the TPS guy said "we sell hundreds of these and have never sold a throttle body wiring repair kit". We shall see...

Sounds promising, the wiring would go from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body probably via other electronics so it could well be the fault. That is the trouble with fault codes, you also need some experience and sometimes trial and error.  It would of been good to try a test with a similar car accelerator to make sure you don't replace for nothing. But fingers crossed.

Just seen this post. I had the same problem last July. Mine also was the throttle pedal. Keeping fingers crossed since then all is good...

Just to update on my situation. So I've had the throttle body swapped out and the car was driving great for a week but then the EPC light came back on and it ran like a dog.

Still intermittent as I can turn the car off and wait a few minutes then turn it back on and the fault is gone. Although it seems to be happening every time I step into the car now.

The mechanic told me he checked and there was a fault on the old throttle body. Surely I cant be that unlucky and installed another faulty throttlebody?? I'm starting to think only Skoda will be able to sort this.

Just a (timely) update on mine - my fault code has also returned. Going to take it back to the garage to get them to have another look. I still suspect the throttle wiring, as found on other VAG of the era. But I lack the kit and skill to diagnose electronics...

Just wondering if you ever got to the bottom of this?

I have changed the throttle body and also the throttle pedal to no avail. I think the next item for me to check is the wiring harness. I fear if that doesn't cure it then it then it may be a fault with the ECU as what else could it be?

I must apologise chaps and chapettes, I've not been on here for a long time. I narrowed it down to being the wiring harness. I used a high-tech fix of unplugging the throttle body, rotating the plug through 360 degrees so there was a twist in the wiring (as per factory) and plugging it back in. Bizarrely the fault hasn't re-occurred over the last 1500 miles...! Worth a go before spending any money.

Shampooefficient I tried this also and i must be approaching 1500 miles fault free as well, touch wood. Somewhat frustrating given how long I've had the car at various mechanics that this is all it took in the end but happy to see the back of it. Thank you good sir.

Hello gyus, having completely the same issue you described. Is there any news after that period? Did the twisting of the wiring helped finally?
