Trouble getting into 1st & 2nd gear

Featured Replies

I'm having trouble getting into first and second gear, with the age and value of the car. I need to try and fix this myself.

No crunching or grinding sounds, pumping the clutch has little effect. But getting the shiftier into position takes 3 or 4 tries and is very stiff. Also sometimes the clutch pedal sticks halfway in.

MK2 2005 1.9TDI 165,000miles.

Try resetting the gearbox linkage cables as a first port of call.

What a pleasure to watch a concise & to the point informative video that does not start with "HI GUYS!" & drags on for ten times longer than needed that you end up fast forwarding through.

Not if you live in Wales.:blush

Clutch pedal sticks surely means you are not getting the clutch disengaging/engaging properly right?  This is master cylinder or slave cylinder territory. Never know which is which. The one on the gearbox outside on the 1.9 are known to breakdown. A bleeed of the system won’t hurt to check for air

Sounds more like clutch is dragging to me

So what was the problem ? I experienced the same last night, I had the DMF replaced a couple of years ago and gear selection was never good after, they also left some bolts out including one holding the front subframe on- a pair of cowboys employed by a so called reputable VAG SPECIALIST outfit in Neston Wirral, they also broke my engine cover removing it, DMF sounded almost as rough as the one I was replacing, its now only lasted about 20k I had the original replaced when I rebuilt the engine inDec 2019, the engine hasn't skipped a beat, now on 200,000I replaced everything except the turbo, which I would later have rebuilt 2 years later
