New hoses etc for Sai delete

Featured Replies

Morning,

I'm looking at removing the SAI and fitting a catch can, I've never done it before but have been reading all the guides on here and other sites (all of which are satisfyingly in depth).

They all mention silicone hose, which makes sense. There are a good number of people saying to use flouro lined hoses for the breather tubes to/ from the catch can.

What's the reason for this, and are standard silicone hoses completely unsuitable for that job?

Also, Is flouro hose needed for any other areas I'm likely to get involved in removing the old hoses and cleaning up the engine bay or is it just for the vapor going through the breather tubes?

As a side to that, I'd assume the hose exiting the catch can doesn't need to be flouro as it *shouldn't* be carrying anything other than air after the can?

I'm planning on grabbing some stuff from Ash hoses as they get good write ups on this site. Any suggestions on which cheaper catch cans are worth a try?

Any advice/ links greatly appreciated and if you read all that in one sitting, well done!

Flouro hose is better than silicone hose as the vapour in the hose is rich in quite corrosive hydrocarbons as well as the oil/water that the catch can filters out.

It is this that rots the standard breather hoses eventually, Silicone resists this, Fluoro is that much better at it, and resists temerature better.

Hope it helps

Thanks!

I'd seen 'flouro hoses' chucked around on various forums but had no idea why really, much appreciated!

Hi JMu,

I don't often visit this site much, but after browsing this thread today thought you would find this info interesting.

Checking through my service history found that :-

I fitted my SaikouMichi Oil Catch can  with Flouro lined hoses (19mm Dia bought from Forge Motorsport)

on 7/10/2010 . I still own the car and its still going well.

There has been no degrading of the hoses, the only change is the short length of hose at the top of engine from cam cover to

the OCC has gone to a darkish blue. I put that down to very hot top end gasses.

I would also suggest any inline "t" or straight connections I changed to brass. I tried using std nylon connectors but they degraded and broke up.

Glass filled polycarbonate should be ok, but brass ones are available on the net and dont cost much more.

Also if you do fit a OCC remember to drain it every so often, I hold a funnel connected to some plastic tubing underneath with it dumping into a small container on the ground.

Good Luck
