Mk3 short shifter

Featured Replies

Hi i recently bought a 2015 octy vrs tdi and find the gearshift throw quite long, after looking into short shifters i see forge do one, some no brand ebay ones and the one i want to know if it will fit the mk3 is the 8J0711046E one i beleive is a audi tts oem one. Sorry if this has been talked about lots before i just want to be sure this will fit before ordering from darkside. Thanks

Just found another thread on this which answers my question, ordered the 8J0711051E darkside 😀

Be aware that the short shifter can make the throw quite 'notchy', especially with the 1st - 2nd change, or getting in reverse. I replaced the gear knob itself with a Forge 'Big Knob' ( 😅  ) recently, and it surprised me how a bigger, lower mounted control makes it such a better experience than OEM.

You can also really improve the manual gear change experience with a good lower (dogbone) engine mount, although on a TDI that can really increase NVH in some cases which probably won't be desirable.

Either way, best of luck and hope it improves the throw!

I have been looking at gearknobs also as im not that fussed on the oem vrs one, i was looking for something that felt and looked similar to my old b6 a4 sline one, the momo air i think its called looked quite nice, have you any pics of youra installed?

So my tts short shift arrived this morning, just fitted it and took it for a drive, all i can say is the gearchange is how it should be from factory in a vrs, i found the oem vrs shift sloppy and far to long between gears, feels perfect to me now, so glad i went for the tts one and not the adjustable ones as for me this is just right.

Sorry for delay - got a few here. Quality isn't great thanks to a very bright day and crap phone camera but there you are.

Be aware that I replaced the OEM leather one with this as I wear a thumb ring and it had eaten away at the leatherette; the scratches on this one prove I still wear it. It's a great-feeling control, though - nice and weighty! The only time it's not so great is when it's been sitting in the sun for a few hours and you need asbestos hands to change gear (although it does cool down pretty quick).

Good to hear about the TTS one - am now more keen to get one. Do post if you have any issues or 'quirks' experienced with it 👍

I had a suspicion it would really improve the feel over OEM - to be fair when I had the lower engine mount installed, it immediately pinned gear selection accuracy and reduced any 'gate' width feeling significantly. So that took my mind off the short shift kit for a while.

I think the Forge knob probably isn't for everyone, but it feels nice aesthetically and makes the shift have a really nice control weight. The wear and tear tolerance on the anodised finish could have been better, but not everyone's a mug like me who wears a tungsten thumb ring so it would probably hold up better over longer without that.

When I get the urge to mimic the old Mk1 MX5 gear throw, I'll look at investing in the TTS version I think.
