  • The only whiny noise I get is when my wife sits in the passenger seat..... 🤭

  • I hope it gets resolved for you.  I have no idea if the noise you are hearing is in any way normal/abnormal/terminal or a "feature" but someone will know (if they can work out what is the issue noise

  • So long as you let the oil settle before topping up so not to overfill????

Hi just listen to it and can't really make out anything untoward.  I hear a squeak but wondering if that is just cabin noise.

Good luck with the test tomorrow.

  • Author

Hi,  The squeak was my per rat 🙂

Actually it was my slightly damp shoe on the accelerator/brake pedal I think but Roland can take the blame.

So that's 1 - 1 on the "Never heard anything like that before/there is a problem"  versus "It's normal".

Anyway too late now - its booked in and if they charge me for wasting police time then I guess I'll have to take the hit. Maybe I should have just left it and let something blow-up - that way they would have a much higher warranty bill then but it would cost me nothing.   I was a bit put off by the "I do need to inform you that if no warranty work is claimable then we will charge you £99" line the service lady took.  She was obviously reading from a card.  Does put one off rather.

It was the farty noise that i was referring to at the times you accelerated that were new to me, from a car with a TSI i mean, farting i hear plenty of.

  • Author

Since when did a farty noise ever get described as a whine. I don't get any farty noise. Sure there is lots of background noise and a general rumble. That's due to the amplification so the actual engine sound can be heard with my limited recording equipment. You can clearly hear the car accelerating and there is a distinct whirr / whine at the points I mentioned . If that's normal gearbox or turbo noise then great. All other noises, Roland or farty pants included are just unwanted sound recording defects. As are the click of the indicators and the occasional creak when the steering wheel moves.....

I missed your whine then, covered by your accelerating noise then.

Whine sounds like nice healthy induction noise to me.

Thanks Wino. Maybe I should postpone the visit 2mo if it all sounds normal. Only seem to have noticed it last week or so but as it's pretty rare circumstance when it kicks in maybe I just missed it during the miles driven so far (only around 1000). I don't mind the sound - just wanted to be sure it was not a terminal type of sound (knowing how much turbo repairs an dq200 Repairs can cost).

Probably worrying over nothing. I will most likely look like a right tit when the tech goes out for a drive with me.

So it went in and the sound was definitely picked up when the master tech took it out for a test drive. He also listened to my sound recording and he heard it on that too.  They said it ddd not sound especially abnormal or in any way terminal but keep an eye on it.  They also hooked it up to check for any faults with gearbox/engine (and there were none) and checked that any "fixes" that might be needed (aka Kangarooing") was all up-to-date (and it was they told me).

I'm happy with that - at least its been acknowledged so I have some comeback later if it develops.

Oh - and they didn't charge me so happy there too.

Cheers,

Paul

just FYI - they would not let me go out with the technician - not allowed at my dealership group at the moment. Even if we were both masked up and so forth.  He had to go alone so if you have an issue where you feel it needs the technician in the car with you then its not going to happen just now. Not at least with the Marshall's group of dealerships.   Even though I was told by the (less than impressive) service desk personnel that I was.

It was quite funny actually - I had to sit there and wait for about 2 hours and I had one customer come in and have a bit of a barney about a £500+ quote for a spark plug and oil change on a V6 Golf.  He said it was a F*****g rip-off and made quite a song and dance about it.  I did chuckle.  He has a point though - how can these dealership service departments justify the nearly twice the price of servicing compared to independent VAG specialist garages. To pay for all the shiny showrooms I guess. It certainly doesn't seem to go into training for service reception front desk people.  Wouldn't you expect this group (the ones that have to interact with (sometimes) anxious/confused/exasperated customers to be the ones that really know there stuff on pricing, service regimes for each model and the differences between long life and regular service regimes, the offers that are on the Skoda Website (e.g. fixed price servicing offers) etc. etc.   It seems its up to the customer to tell them and then get "Oh yea" - "I didn't know that" or similar.   Fair enough - charge twice the price per hour but be twice as good if you are going to 🙂

Glad you did not get charged and they could confirm the noise. Hopefully nothing serious for the future.

I only got the car in March this year and it was all checked and topped up etc by the selling dealer.

Oil was at bottom of acceptable range

Now that your whine is hopefully getting sorted, maybe, as the vehicle is not very old, worth looking into the oil loss / usage...... Seems a lot going by your description, and that the selling dealer topped it up in march, and you saying it was at minimum mark and you have had to put more in a few months later, possibly must be very little used during lock-down too, no?

Just a thought.

  • Author

Good point.  I "assume" they topped it up as part of their "ahem" extensive pre-sales checks of approved used cars.  Maybe they just checked it (if indeed they did) and as it was above minimum so left it.  I now know the level myself having checked it and topped it up so I will check again just before its serviced and if its moved I will mention it to them at the service.  Its due for its 1st oil change in a month 🙂   Ill be sure to check it immediately after the service  (as from memory they always seem to only put in the bare minimum) and then check it again a month later too.

Thanks for the heads up on that one.  I could have easily forgotten.

Be sure and check if they will be putting in 0w 20 FS IV so to VW508.

?

Is that what you have used to top up with?

It is Skoda Dealership Employees and Customer Services that are saying the the use of VW504 could invalidate a warranty claim.

That is a nonsense, and plenty Dealerships have been using 5w 30 FS III and recently some seemingly using 0w 30 FS III,

neither of which are now the recommended spec by Skoda / VW.

I've done 1200 miles (1931km) since I had the car.  the manual states:

"Depending on the driving style and operating conditions, the engine uses some oil (up to 0.5 l / 1 000 km). Consumption may be slightly higher than this during the first 5 000 km".

I am assuming the volume of oil between min and 1/2 way on dipstick is approx 500ml so 1000ml approx from min to max.  If it was exactly 1/2 way at collection then 500mls in 1931kms would seem to be perfectly normal (in fact somewhat less than the manual states)?  Unless I am missing something??

???  I never said anything about customer services invalidating anything ???

..... and yes I used VW.504 as it states its okay in the manual and it happens to be what I has on the shelf from my previous car (which was a bit of luck).

I will check what they put in at the service of course.  I am going over to fixed time and distance at the first service / 1 year anniversary as at the moment its on Variable long life regime but hat is not suitable for my as I only do 6000-8000 miles per year. I assume vw.504 is best for fixed annual services anyway but I did see the extensive post on that 🙂

It is OK to use, but it is not a good practice to mix specs, you can in an emergency or maybe as you have done before a Service.

But then Demonstrators / Ex Management car are often run until a warning light shows then the 'Professional sales person or technician might add oil'.

Maybe even the VW 504,  so maybe in March that was added.

Running oil at lower levels / quantities means that oil is harder used, maybe 1/4 low from the correct quantity and then gets lower quicker.

It is all basic stuff.

A car should leave the service with the correct quantity of oil, and just because a fitter or tech says they did, the dipstick of truth needs used when 'At normal operating temperature',  not when a car has sat idling for a few minutes.

The VW508/509 was used to get lower emission figures for the WLTP that VW Group needed..

Agreed.  Only used it as an interim as next service due soon.  I will ask them to tell me the exact oil used at the service and get some of that 🙂

@smipx

I said that Dealership Employees and Skoda Employees have been saying that the 'Incorrect Oil will invalidate a warranty'.

The reason i posted that is because they have been doing,  while recommending the wrong oil too many times.

I was just pointing this out.

In the past weeks members have been given a bum steer by asking on a live chat with some person that supposedly deals with Skoda enquiries.

  • Author

OK cool.  thanks for that.....

  • 4 weeks later...

just to round off my own thread (apologies I posted this in another thread too but)

...

Just had my 1st service (only 4500 miles on the clock) and they confirmed that it was filled up with VW504.  At the service I did also get them to switch over from Variable service reginme to fixed time and distance so I don't know if that would have made them use one particular oil or 'tother.  The invoice also states 5W30 4.7 litres.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul, it’s Paul 😁

sorry to drag up an old thread but I have just recently bought a used ,2018, Skoda Karoq dSG and have started to notice a whining noise as you describe.Mostly when pulling off and occasionally when going I to 2nd and 3rd.

Your recording is no longer available but wondering if it is the same as mine.

Do you still have the car, does it still make that noise and have you noticed any further issues.

I am happy to live with it if I know it’s kinda normal

actually listening back, found the recording.Mine is a different noise. It’s when I am pulling off just as the clutch releases it whines and then disappears

Hi,  I do still have the car and I guess it is "kind of normal" but the problem is that when you report it they make you look as though you are mad at the dealers.  They did this too with my self reclining chair mechanism so I kind of gave up and learned to live with it.  In fairness it was my 1st DSG and fairly early on in my ownership experience and having come from a planetary Auto box it was very different.  In hindsight it has not "failed" in any way (gearbox) so I guess it is just a "characteristic".

The self reclining seat - well I just learned to wind it back up to the more vertical position every time I get into the car. By the end of the day it needs winding up again.  Went in to the garage 3 times for that but they refused (Skoda customer services) to belive it even though I managed to prove it was happening by putting white dots on the wheel and seat and wiggling around a bit in the seat (to simulate going over a bumpy road) and the master tech seeing that it moved.  He just said "that's not normal human behavior".  I gave up!

The suspension has also always been creaky/popping in colder weather, especially going over speed bumps etc. and for the first few miles in wetter/colder weather but again,  Went out with the master tech and he said it was "normal" so gave up on trying to persuade them it was "not normal" or "should not be normal".  For that one I may get an indie to do a clean and full lube of the bushes and such (I wouldn't trust/pay the VAG garage to do that).  If the indie finds a problem then it will be "wear and tear" anyway - even though I reported it and fought for it at year 2 with VAG.

I will not be getting another VAG car.   I strongly recommend the All in package - I have that and when it runs out ......  the car is going to be moved on.

Don't get me wrong - 90% of the car is great but the lack of addressing clear faults by the dealership / Skoda UK has put me right off VAG group cars.

On the plus side.  My passenger side electric window mechanism failed on my Karoq and it was done under all-in-one and both of my wifes window mechanisms on her Fabia (2019) also failed - one during the 1st 3 years warranty and the other in the All-in-one phase.  Both were replaced under warranty so both all-in-one warranties have paid for themselves and I still have the comfort of the rest of the all-in-one for other issues.

Oh - yes - I got a plastic rubber seal replaced too under the warranty as the original fell off (bottom of rear door - Poor Design.  Keep an eye on those.

Cheers,

Paul
