Sat Nav and New style cradle....

Featured Replies

I am contemplating buying a cheaper sat nav (possibly Garmin Drive 5 Pro) ,and I already have a newer style cradle with clamping jaws.

Aperture size seems to be 14 x 8 cms max.Can anyone recommend a unit that would fit ,and run via USB fitting on top of dash?

This might sound like a daft question, but do you have a smartphone?

Yes, Nokia unit, but monthly allowed call  time on it is limited. If it uses call time to run the sat nav, then that is out.Prefer to fit a sat nav unit, running off USB lead.Trying to use the cradle instead  of a sucker on the screen.....

Fair enough - I was going to suggest using something like Google maps in offline mode, so you put the maps on your phone using wifi at home and it doesn't use data when you're out and about, but that might not work or be available for you.

As our citigo has the mk1 mount, I'll shut up now 🙂

There is an adaptor mount for a Tomtom satnav available and I'm sure its a genuine accessory from Skoda/VW.  It looks like it is for the Tomtom Start satnavs which can be picked up cheap enough.

Looks like it might be suitable?

As said, you can run SatNav on your phone without impacting any of your data allowance. You will need access to WiFi/Broadband in order to download maps - but only initially.

One issue with dedicated SatNav units is that some won't run off a USB port, or at least won't stay charged up. In some cases, the 5V off USB is too low, and/or the maximum USB current is too low... My unit will charge up fine off USB 2 when turned off,  but when operating, there is not enough current to run it and charge it at the same time - I have to use the dedicated 12v power supply that came with the SatNav.

The USB spec is: 0.5 A (USB 2.0), 0.9 A (USB 3.0), 1.5 A (BC 1.2),  3 A (USB-C)...    USB 1/2/3 is normally a question of data rate, but it is a fact that chargers can vary a lot in current output, although I have no idea what the spec is for the port on the Citigo's dashboard.

So it's not necessarily an issue, but check the spec of any SatNav unit you may want to buy. Someone on this forum will probably know the spec (current) of the Citigo's USB port!

Thanks for the replies.  Can't see the VW plate mentioned ,fitting in the cradle.     I think the mobile will have to be used -like it or not....

The new type cradle comes in two pieces I believe.  The above satnav mount attaches to the base part of the cradle.  Picture below may help.
