Removing tailgate 'opening handle' from tailgate.

Featured Replies

Before buying a rear view camera I thought I would find out what needs to be done in order to fit it. Seeing what route and how easy or hard the job would be.

I started with the estate tail gate, removed the interior trim panels to see how to remove the release handle. First -and I hope last- problem, the handle is partially hidden by the interior of the tailgate inner skins and the wiper motor unit. the handle seems to be held in place with 2 metal clips on each long side and 2 metal clips on each short side, so 6 in total. 3 of which seem very difficult to get at, the 2 clips on the top side and the 1 on the right side (Looking from inside the load space).  Logic indicates that the 6 clips need to be released before the handle can be removed, if so, how on earth do you get at all of them or do you need to remove the wiper assembly first? ( I hope not!) I intend to route the cable through the headlining down the A pillar to the fuse box, I have heaved, sworn at, cursed and pulled the A pillar cover but it refuses to release. Is there a knack to removing this? With the airbag within I need to be careful.

My car is a 2015 1.4 TSI Elegance Estate.

You don’t need to do all the clips, just the 2-3 you can reach and apply plenty of pressure and it’ll pop out. The A post trim needs a good pull, there are 3 clips. Once it’s released it needs to be slid up and can be removed but I find if you have a tool to shove the cable under the trim it doesn’t need removing.

I found with the A pillar cover it helps to stand outside the car, get a few fingers from each hand in behind it (trim removal tools can help) an push it in parallel to the windscreen. Takes a bit of effort and bravery alright :).

Thank you Sasha, I will give it a good push,  pray and close my eyes! I bought a set of trim tools some time ago so now I can use them instead of looking at them. I would prefer to remove the A cover and make sure the new cable does not cross the airbag.

I will need to code this in, I was thinking of getting an obdeleven pro to use with my Android phone and check for any faults etc. Can you go back with this or back up the cars settings before making any changes and go back if things go wrong?

Iway. Am I brave enough I wonder, nothing ventured nothing gained as they say......

Thank you Sasha.

Just ordered the Next Gen Pro Pack obd11 from Voltas IT, Amazon wants £119.99 and is supplied by Voltas IT, buying direct from Voltas IT inc postage £89.72 so if you're not in a hurry direct is much cheaper and I would prefer to buy from them in case of support.

And the camera from AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32964908529.html

Now to see how long they take to arrive.

Usual typo's......

Don’t want to rain on the parade but mine came today and it doesn’t work with the iPhone, mines not the only one so I’m waiting on Voltas support to get to the route cause. I’ll be trying it on an Android device tomorrow. Just want to warn you that some of them aren’t connecting right now. Hopefully it’ll be sorted ASAP. Never had an issue with my first gen one.

I did notice on their website some functions were listed as under development so maybe not fully functioning yet. I only have android so I hope I will not have a problem.

Hope you get  it sorted soon, must be frustrating to find it does not work.🤔
