Shockingly rusty

Featured Replies

I siddled up alongside another vRS this morning at the traffic lights, silver 54 reg, and looked at the staggering amount of rust on the o/s sill and front section of the rear wheel arch. Really badly bubbled up.

Horrible mess. Is this normal? Never seen one like that before.

Think I better look into getting my 05 one waxoiled pronto

No  pictures, sorry. I was alone in the car

I’ve owned 3 now and 2 didn’t have rust there but one did. I’ve seen a few parked up that had it also.

It’s the same with the tailgate above the reg plate or inside the rear arch liners. Some do some don’t.

Simple enough to just flip them on their roof and let a Police Examiner and loss adjuster give them a good inspection.

Not seen the tailgate rust.

I'm going to be on the hunt now so I know where to concentrate on prevention.

Any recommendations  for oop here in the dark and dismal N.W anyone?

That's actually reminded me.

My 'drip tray' has mysteriously vanished?

Is there a market for nickin' 'em I wonder?

This is how mine started. Got a local repair guy to strip it back, treat and repaint. It came back after about 18 months. Changed the tailgate for a clean one in the end

Sills -  where out of sight use red oxide primer then coloured overcoat eg metallic rust proof paint.

Tailgate - rub down to metal with 80 grit then 120 then wet dry 300 and get all rust out and spray with etch primer--high build primer (not essential but flattens out imperfections from sanding) --'coloured paint of your choice --clear lacquer to waterproof.

Acetone (brake cleaner) excellent for cleaning grease.

Use gloves.

Fan heater essential or 20C plus temp and leave overnight between types of spray.

Thanks for pointing out the process the local repair bloke went through to try and sort my rust, but as I said, this didn’t cure it and came back. Replacement was the only option after that.
