Help. Full beam headlights not working

Featured Replies

UrbanPanzer marked the projector with his arrow. The projector is a kind of "Globe" that the bulb sits in, once in the light unit. (Looks a bit like some sort of Christmas light from the front of the car). Don't try taking that out as its manufactured in. It means taking out the whole light assembly, (Bumper off, etc) then splitting the light as they are glued. Hard work unless you are fitting better projectors, as someone did here, once!

In your lights, there is the signal bulb, upper left area if looking AT the headlight pictured above, with the arrow and facing the car. Then you have the sidelight bulb. This is on the left of the picture again, about halfway down, or perhaps a bit lower.

The sidelights are well known to be a pain to get at as they have a very small aperture inside the bonnet area and are usually well set back inside, with a fairly hard to pull, bulb holder. I can offer a reasonably easy way of getting to these, if you need it as I have done mine a few times and fitted LED's there.

I am confident UrbanPanzer has given you the most likely reason for your lights failing as he has had experience of fitting these stalks, before.

The steering wheel itself, is held on by a bolt, which supposedly is meant to be replaced with a new one, each time the wheel is removed. I would suggest if using the existing one, to at least put some threadlock on the bolt, prior to refitting it.

There are a few posts on youtube, showing how to remove the airbag/wheel, etc and yes, it looks sort of straight forward but take note of the advice about removing the battery earth first. A new airbag is pricey, even used ones sell for around £50, perhaps more and will have no known history. I doubt they will be duff but if the car they were removed from was scrapped, why was the airbag still intact? Just a thought!

EDIT... I just realised, I may have been answering the bulb position with regards to the older lights, not the facelift, without noticing who posted what question/query. My post here, is particularly for the older pre facelift...  The steering wheel issue will be the same, though. Its kind of funny why  they changed the layout of the headlights. Perhaps an improvement on light output, following consultation or more likely, to sell more new cars where the first and most easily spotted difference is the placement of the projector "Globe" Inside the unit! Inner edge globes-old car, outer edge globes-new car!

Reminds me of the late, great Roger Moore and his raised eye-brows. He was renown for it, even though Sean Connery did the same thing, albeit more discreetly!

Old Bond, little eye-brow raise-new Bond, bigger eye-brow raise!

yes the top cowl just clips off, carefully prize it apart at one side.   So if you do that, hopefully there will be a sticker with the number on it just on the top.

I would definitely advise looking at the part number on ones existing part before ordering anything, if it's visible just by popping off that top cowling.   There are still other part  numbe

All depends on price as would need to buy some tools

You don't need any special tools, just a screw driver, some torx bits (T20 or T25) and a socket / ratchet to undo the steering wheel.

Its a shame your not local to me, would gladly assist / do it for you.

I took out the H7 s from behind that lens globe thing today, tried some other ones there, and still no joy with the full beam of course.

Mrgf I'm a little confused, were you meaning i'd have to change the air bag if I messed up the steering wheel/stalk removal ? ie left it still connected to battery when removing airbag? I hope that's what you mean.

That said could I lose the stereo, security code or something when disconnecting the battery, I heard that some of these modern cars punish the unwary for disconnecting the battery.  I've noticed the fog lights look like the bumper needs to come off to get to them.

I'm struggling to find a replacement stalk, a few sellers on e bay seem to want £90 but don't seem to sell the specific one for the petrol estate with cruise control. The stalk appears to be both sides, so 2 stalks connected in a ring shaped bit of plastic. Fawnrush can I ask where you located your replacement?

Got mine from Ebay. Don't need cruise control etc. Its 1 unit with wipers 1 side and lights the other

Urbanpanzer can you recommend anywhere to get the stalk?

I was also wondering  if anyone knows if the car would be MOT able if I i hard wired a dash switch directly to (fused) power and then on to the two h7 that work when doing the temporary flash would that be a legal alternative to this issue?

Fawnrush thanks for the video, You have done well finding one for £24

I'm struggling on ebay getting plenty of

"

This item doesn't fit Skoda Fabia 2012 MK II [2006-2014] Estate 1.2 TSI Estate 1197ccm 105HP 77KW (Petrol)."

That video was reassuring, the procedure seems quite straight forward, though I wonder if the 2012 model will have the same sort of set up.

Everything relating to lights should be in that section. Section 4.1.3. Switching is probably where you need to look.

Probably easier to fix the fault properly than to rig up some legal workaround.

yes you "could" do that, but you would also have to have some kind of "indicator" that its on.......and goes off with the main light switch..........."imo" not worth the hassle.

slightly diff numbers across the VAG range.....

So you can either tell us what you have ref cruise yes/no / maxidot display yes/no etc etc..............or post a picture of BOTH stalks so we can see.

And when the car was built / registered.

I think the other guy said it might mess things up but aside from setting off/messing any coding, etc, you would not want to accidentally fire the airbag off! So disconnecting the battery is the best safest option. With standard stereo units, recoding won't be necessary as once the battery is refitted, turn on the ignition and stereo, it will self check and say "Safe", then after a few seconds, start to work normally. You will also need to restart the auto windows. If help is needed here, just ask.

I have pics of the stalks, headlights etc but it will only allow me to upload 10 MB of data. Is that a day? on this forum? ever? I've partially obscured the vin, wino said it was recommended for the introverted. What ill will could be done with the a strangers VIN details?

Jjust resize the images, or post more than one time with image in each.......

Ok so you have a maxidot and trip computer...........

just confirm if you have cruise or not ?

So I believe he has cruise control. I don't think there is anything specific to it being an estate, though, regarding headlight stalks, etc.

Mainly, you need to know if cruise is on the new ones. I am unsure even if maxi dot makes a difference but on a standard dash setting, you have the little trip computer stuff on the right, along with wiper controls, on the left you have signals, headlight main/dipped/flash and then, additionally, cruise functions.

Quick question to Wino, if he knows,  can the standard non-cruise stalks be swapped for cruise, along with any necessary additional wiring or if it more complicated then that? I am wondering if it then needs coding, etc. (Would it be plug and play to a local loom socket or is there much more wiring, through to say, the ECU, along with extra coding via VCDS). I have wondered this for some time but never looked it up, along with swapping the steering wheel for a M/F one, to operate the audio controls to a small degree. I might post these questions anyway, soon.

Thats cheap !!........(if it works)

PS

I'm pretty sure after watching the video he posted he does not have cruise.

Im which case I have one here which I removed from mine when I fitted cruise, perfect working order.

£35 posted if your interested.

Thank you for all the responses. I DO have cruise control. In fact I bought this model primarily for that function alone.

Regarding the video previously posted by fawnrush, I suspect it is NOT applicable to my car , As I haven't yet managed to find the two holes in the back of the airbag shroud. will try with a mirror, but can't feel them. The  ebay links seem to show the unit as 2 individual sides, (one side, one stalk) I'm after the left hand side, the cruise controls, lights, fullbeam , flash full beam, indicators, and something that's on, off, cancel. On the other side (right) is wipers and computer stuff like average MPG oil temp etc.

Struggling to re size pictures, as I can't see any edit facility

now im confused !!!! 🤔

There is 2 Ops with the SAME issue ?

my post ref cruise, was to Fawnrush.................to be 100% honest did not even notice the different names.....

The parts catalogue is doing my head in somewhat, but I think if Fred66's car was built on or before 27/05/12 he'd need the suffix-AN item 1 here: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2012-697/9/953-953050/

and if built on or after 28/05/12 it'd be 6R0 953 507C from this page: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2012-697/9/953-953051/#1

I'm not sure I'd order a spare without having seen the part number sticker on the original, given the sheer number of options.

Does the top cowling, item 5 on those pages, just pull off upwards, that would be too easy, right...

And none of them seem to fit part number-wise with what Fawnrush posted up-page, which confuses me further.

Edited by Wino

wino, I'll try the cowl. fawnrush's part doesn't have cruise control, so no good for me.

Thanks very much for your help, sorry my car has been such a pain. Will contact the garage that sold it originally, maybe they ought to know when it was made.
