Wierd noise from rear

Featured Replies

Hello i have a bad creaking noise from the rear left side on my 2005 octavia Estate 2wd. see video:

The noise keep coming, when i drive regularly, and it seems like there is something wrong with the brakes. There is actually some resistance when i turn the wheel compared to the other siden.

I have changed, the brakepads, the gliding bits for the pads, the caliper, the flex hose, and the wheel bearing was changed 3 months ago.

I dont think its from the suspension

Any suggestion on what this problem could be?

That sounds like a very poorly bearing and not far off from collapse.  What's puzzling me is you're hearing the noise without the wheel turning?

It sounds to me like the brake is binding.

If you have replaced the caliper with a good item, try disconnecting the handbrake cable from that caliper and recheck.  I suspect a sticky old cable.

No it wasn't the handbrake cable  i tried to disconnect it.

^Agree with MicMac, though not necessarily the handbrake cable, could be hydraulic problem..

My car will make that noise if I stop and put the handbrake on not quite enough when reversing out of the driveway, to get out and shut the gate. The car has moved a few mm as the noise happens.

Can you confirm was the handbrake on or off when the video was recorded?

The noise is that which Wino describes but the cause may vary according to the answer to the above.

As you say there is rotational resistance, there should be heat build up in the disc.

If it is noticeably hotter than the other side then it has to be the caliper not operating as it should.

Perhaps the piston seal was fitted incorrectly/damaged and causing binding or a piece of swarf/dirt entered the caliper and is impeding correct fluid flow.

Anti roll bar bushes?

I tried to remove the brake pads and then i tried fiting the wheel without the brakes. It still makes that sound. It isn't the brakes after all

I'm gonna have a friend come over to take a closer look.

It's somewhere on the suspension

It can be difficult to find the source sometimes, try a squirt of soapy water on the suspension bushes starting at the lowest and work upwards until the sound changes/stop.

In light of the resistance to rotation you mentioned, it may well be the new bearing that's failed as StickyMicky suggested.

If that noise is not the creaking of a handbrake not quite managing to do its job then I am a Dutchman.
