Smelly Aircon

Featured Replies

Right folks, just got car back after 3 weeks of holidays in Peru :D

However - the aircon STINKS!

How can i get rid of this awful honk?

well, you can try running it for a while in the hottest setting to see if it takes away the humidity inside the evaporator. If not, then you probably have a clogged evap and will need to clean/replace it.

What does it stink like? dead animal or old wet cloth?

You can buy cans of air con cleaner that you sit in the car and leave the aircon on set to recuirculate, Halford sell them, whether they work or not is another matter!

Also a dirty pollen filter can cause many nasty smells, these are cheap and simple to replace, but your best bet as above is probably just to run it for a while.

Open the bonnet and remove the plastic panel under the wipers, if there is no dead animals (birds or mice can get in easily enough), then change the pollen filter. (i'm assuming the pollen filter hasn't been changed for a while, I change mine every service).

I think everyone has had this at various times and the general consensus is that it comes from a combination of not using the aircon all the time (all weathers) and not turning it off a short while before finishing your journey. As previously stated it is probably bacteria growth int he evaporator. What worked for me was giving it a real thrash at full heat and full power to burn off the bacteria - did this a few times over a week and it gradually improved - I now also make sure that when i ahve been using the aircon in hot weather I make sure I turn it off about 5 minutes before stopping to allow the system to dry out. Its fine now

We do an air con service.

This will clean the air con.

It will help with the smells.

As it works like a fridge it can get bacterior in the system and this will clean all of this and get it clean again.

29.95 + VAT we charge for this.

It could be worth thinking about this now that the warmer weather is coming

see if anyone will sell you a can of aircon cleaner/disinfectant with the long nozzle/hose attachment that you can shove in from either ends of the ducting...

ie facia ducts and footwell ducts - and from behind the pollen filter into the ducts too...

i buy mine from Berner here in czech - worth doing for the few quid it costs.. but don't know if Berner deals in the UK, probably Wurth should do something equivalent too...

I'd give the intakes a few squirts of Dettox or similar, with the fan on full. It's anti-bacterial, so it should have some effect.

Comma Aircon cleaner from Halfrauds works fairly well......I did mine last Summer....reckon a couple of cans will do the job proper....

AirCon cleaner from Halfords worked for me last summer when mine honked.

As above though, you set if in the car with the fans on full and have to wait for the can to empty... word of warning though, leave it for at least another 5-10 minutes before opening the car door, the cleaner takes your breath.

Dad ran a can through his Astra when he first had it as well and he said it made loads of difference.

I drive a P Reg Volvo at work, the aircon smelt like horse sh*te about a month ago and it was down to leaking, so it was fixed and regassed, and now it smells like a roses..............
