Skoda Octavia 2012 L&K

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've recently bought an Octavia with 46k miles on. Can someone please clarify these for me please:

1. Can the digital speedo be put in miles intead on km like it's currently displaying?

2. On the columbus I have a phone button, all it does is muting the sound in the car. I was hoping for a BT connection, any ideas on that?

3. It has FSH at main dealer but I can't see any gearbox service, should I do it for the peace of mind?

First time poster, long time lurker in the Superb forum, but a change in circumstances made me buy an Octavia instead. Love the car by the way.

Regards,

Flav.

I can't seem to be able to edit the post, so apologies. The car is 2.0 Tdi Dsg. Cheers

To get the display into MPH, you need to change into Australia mode with VCDS iirc:

Dunno about the Bluetooth, but the technology has moved on quite a bit since 2012 so you may not end up with the experience you're after if you retrofit the Skoda kit. Is there a box under the driver's seat? I think that's where the Bluetooth controller lives.

Is it the DSG7? They're supposed to be filled for life, but there was a recall as some came filled with the wrong oil.

Hi, and thanks for the reply. I'll have a look under the seat, don't understand the purpose of a PHONE dedicated button on the Columbus if no BT.

Gearbox is 6 speed, but I've seen people doing service on 7 speed aswell.

Anyone with a coding tool near Manchester? I'll bring bear :)

To save them needing to make two different headunits for cars with or without BT :)

It also means you can retrofit BT without replacing the headunit.

For the 6 speed it should be done every 4 years iirc. The dealer fixed price is £200 I think, or if you're not afraid to get stuck in its not too difficult to DIY it, I think I spent about £90 on the genuine oil and filter.

When I got mine there was no mention of the DSG being serviced (or the cambelt, more alarmingly) so I made sure I did it at the first opportunity.

For the Bluetooth you need a wiring harness, microphone (this fits into the interior light) and the Bluetooth module. The module plugs into the back of the stereo. The stock location is under the driver's seat but there is room behind the glovebox to mount it which makes cable routing a little easier.

It then needs activating via VCDS.

And the 6 speed DSG needs a service (oil and filter) every 4 years or 40,000 miles which ever comes sooner.

Sounds like the BT is a PITA to do. Having a full service at a skoda dealer, I was hoping for all the work to be properly done. But they didn't do the gearbox. At least they've done the cambelt.

Thank you all for the help!

Was the car sold as having full service history?

Yes. I have the service book. It's been done in June, including cambelt. Does not say anything regarding the water pump. I'll get the car to a full check next week and the gearbox done aswell.

Fitting Bluetooth is about an hour's work if you know what you're doing. I've done a few when I've sold them, and I have one in the workshop currently which will be going up for sale soon.

I can live without BT, just curios about the dedicated phone button and the lack of it. Was hoping for some sort of software update or something.

I'll look for what I need to get myself a tool for softwarw tweeks to sort the digital speedo out, after making sure the car is mechanicaly sound.

If I change the car to Australia, would the digital speedo be displayed like in this photo? This one is a 2011 Octavia Vrs.

Yes - that's exactly what mine looks like, on my 2010 L&K set to Australia mode :)

I hope it works on mine. What should I buy for the adaptation, Carli or Vcds? Any recommendations?

VCDS is the most widely used, you'll get a lot more support for it if you get stuck.

VCDS is by far the best. But comes down to your budget.

Thank you both.

The reason the digital speed display is in km/hr is it is a work around as uk cars must show mph and km/h. They chose do it this way I suspect as it is cheaper (they already had the display) than dual markings on the speedo.

My Speedo is in km/h and the digital is also in km/h. Then I have the ability to add a 2nd speed display in the Maxidot setting which appears above the ambient temp display at the bottom as mph.

They should have done it the same for the UK model too.

They should, but it's all about the money :) Hopefully it will work with coding, otherwise this is a big  minus on a quite decent car. But I've seen a 2011 Vrs with a different speedo and digital speed in Mph aswell. That seems odd, mine is 2012 L&K and I would expect the same.

Why do you need two speedo readings? Is one not enough?

It's sometimes nice to have a digital readout of the exact speed. The needle can look like 30mph for instance but the actual speed is 28 or 32 for example.

Well, one is enough. The big one in Mph, for Uk use would be nicer. Currently it has the analog one in Mph, and the small digital in Kmh. And the setting of the Mph one is 20,40,60mph etc. In the city is 30 mph mostly, and you have to use the lines between the bigger number, which is annoying. It's mostly a comfort option in my opinion, but nice to have.
