START-STOP functionality

Featured Replies

Am I correct in thinking that if the AC is switched on then the START-STOP feature will not operate. The owner's manual states on page 55 that the engine has to be running for the AC to operate.

I have my AC on all the time and it still cuts the engine.  Until I switch it off that is, usually on the first cut out. 👍

That's interesting. I'll try it again when I'm next out but I imagine that the AC compressor is mechanically driven off the crankshaft pulley. Maybe I'm wrong but the user manual does say that the engine needs to be running for the AC to operate. I suppose that the compressor drive could stop and start without the AC light going on and off. Not sure really how the compressor is energised. Maybe somebody else can clarify this.

Close to the bottom of page 1 in this thread there's a link to a workshop manual for the Karoq (and other models) A/C system https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/459017-karoq-workshop-manuals/

From the briefest of looks at that download, you're right about your first three sentences in that quote. The compressor is a variable displacement type, regulated by the solenoid valve N280, see within that manual for further details.

Short answer, it won't/can't be doing any cooling while the compressor isn't rotating.

It works whenever the engine is on and then just reverts to normal blow cool air when its in stop mode however - if its only for a few seconds at the lights then the air is still quite cool for 15-20 seconds while the AC coolant matrix uses up its latent "coolness". any longer and the air starts to come through at ambient.  The Stop Start will not cut in if the sensors detect that the cabin temperature is too far away from the temperature you have selected and likewise for the heating in the winter.  If its way of what you ask for then it keeps teh engine running.  There are also many other factors that determine if it will kick-in or not - some of them obvious and some of them only known to the programmers.  Quite often it will not kick-in and the message on the entertainment screen does not always give the full information as to why.  Sometimes it does but often it will say something like "Electrical consumption too high" even when you have the AC off, the battery is fully charged, nothing is plugged in, the lights are off (apart from hte DRL's) and such like.

Thanks guys for your input. The algorithms that determine whether or not the Start Stop can be enabled seem incredibly complicated. Don't you just love being in control of what you are driving!

Wait until the front assist decides to do an emergency stop for you because of a stray blade of grass.  Then you'll know how much control we have all started to lose. Then think forward to self driving cars and say Noooooooo not on my lifetime pleeeeease.

I've got a Jaguar MkII 3.8 which I am currently renovating. It has twin SU carburettors and if you are lucky will achieve 20-25 mpg. One thing about the Karoq is that I regularly see well over 40 mpg accompanied by excellent performance so it's not all bad even if it doesn't achieve the manufacturer's quoted mpg figures! One thing about modern cars is that they are generally extremely reliable although nowhere near as engaging to drive as a classic car. As I get older I realise however that neither are classic cars anywhere near as comfortable ! As for safety don't even go there .........
