Goodbye vRS TDi... hello 245 challenge!

Featured Replies

So after recently remapping my vRS tdi I was still longing for more so I bit the bullet and bought a 69 plate vRS 245 challenge and wow what a car.

Anyone who is in a similar predicament, I say do it, bite the bullet and buy one! I had a 4hr drive from the dealership I purchased it from and achieved an average of 39.5 mpg (without trying and without checking it the whole journey) at decent motorway speeds in normal and comfort mode. So knowing I can get nearly 40mpg on a run without trying, suits me to the ground. Of course around town its awful especially with a lead right foot.

Things I love about the car:

- The power - anyone who says a remapped tdi is as quick as a petrol is completely lying, maybe a stage 2 diesel with a bigger turbo, but even then it’d be close

- Pan roof - never had one before and it is lovely

- Heated front/ rear and steering wheel

- Virtual cockpit, easily the best bit about the car never realised how powerful it could be

- Rear USB ports, essential if you have kids!

Things I dislike:

- The entertainment system can sometimes be slow (old car was the same) and the reversing camera sometimes stays on for a while after driving off

- The fact the drive mode selector always defaults back to ‘normal’, this is annoying. My old 2018 diesel remembered my driving mode

Anyway... got a lot of love for the vRS tdi (i have owned 2 of them), but for now the 245 is ticking all of the boxes!

The most annoying part of all of this however... is Hatch Bag do not do a boot liner for the Octavia Hatch with canton and I can’t find a company who do as nice Custom fitting boot liners which is a real ****er!

Awesome. Now get an is38 turbo from a Golf r and a remap.

Have fun

So, you have moved away from the darkside to the light. Feel the force of the petrol VRS. Glad to say the driving mode in my VRS 230 stays where I leave it.

Haha, i was considering a stage 1, I believe I can get around 300hp from the standard turbo? don’t want to push more as the FWD I’m sure will be a bit of a barrier?

Exhaust next I think, inside it sounds nice (fake but nice)... but outside it could be any old petrol rubbish! Milltek cat back (or OPF back) I think...

I thought about the petrol but I dont like the FL front end and couldn't find a pre FL to my specs. I also commute quite a bit and easily get 50+mpg out of my VRS diesel, even with DSG which isnt the most economical as opposed to manual.

I may switch back to petrol in the mk4 Octy VRS in a couple of years.

Enjoy your new car and it looks to be very well specified 👍

Thanks! I have had 2 diesel vRS’s in the Mk3 and one in the Mk2 so I know them well and they are very capable cars which can return semi good fuel economy. I was Impressed at how economical the petrol could be, but ultimately it’ll never beat the diesel... yeah the mk4 looks very nice indeed

Same as me. Though I had a TFSi mk2 and then later a CR170 Mk2.

I will wait until the mk4 has been out a while to teeth out any gremlins first.

Absolutely, I was waiting for the mk4 but then decided I am better with a mk3 with lots of options for less than a new mk4.... as you say, wait for the gremlins to be uncovered is the best shout!

My old Vrs245 on 99 octane fuel was 249bhp standard and 302bhp stage 1 map and torque was 400nm standard (Skoda claim only 370nm) and 467nm afterwards. Stage 1 is the sweet spot for this engine as peak power is produced at 5,000rpm with the smaller IS20 turbo. Peak torque is found at 2,600rpm so if you go for stage 2 and over 500nm of torque the handling gets a bit unruly and scary trying to deploy the power unlike my current car the Superb 272 with the bigger Golf R IS38 turbo it not only copes with 514nm of torque but could handle even more due to the grip from the 4WD. One of my all time favourite Skoda colours Rallye Green so much so my silver brake calipers (brakes are identical on Superb 272 to the Octy 245) are now painted in Rallye Green. As others have said enjoy your new motor and try not to spend too much on it otherwise you might regret it like I did.

Great looking car mate you will love it. That colour is super handsome :)

I've done an IS38 conversion, roughly 380 bhp and it handles it nicely... no regrets here

Thanks, I’ll wait till I am bored on this power and then go for a stage 1 i think, did you ever change the exhaust?

Yeah wish I hadn't not really worth it IMHO cost £600 for a HJS Sports downpipe and £1,200 for the full Milltek stainless cat back system when I went stage 2. Not going to touch the exhaust on the Superb, then again I think they appeal to different age groups so perhaps I was too old for the 245. Everything was standard on the car at 302bhp just better 99 octane fuel which I always use.:notme:

Thanks! I am just disappointed in the exterior sound so want ever so slightly more noise, nothing anti social and I don’t want to look like a yob in the work car park... but when I accelerate I want people outside to at least hear that its a semi sporty car! I was considering a Miltek resonated OPF back system, but as you say they are upwards of 1k and I can’t find any videos with the resonator... they are all without annoyingly!

Mine was resonated it was slightly noisier on the motorway and had a nice burble at idle (purposeful) but with the cone air filter (Airtec) and Airtec intercooler upgrade it only gained an extra 34bhp and an extra 50nm of torque and was the best part of £3,000 including the HEL stainless brakelines and DOT5 racing brake fluid. I should have bought a used Superb 280 and spent the money modifying that instead with hindsight and got over 400bhp plus 4WD.

Thanks! Appreciate your comments and feedback gives me something to think about!

With exhausts it depends what your tolerances to noise, vibration and harness are like. It does also matter a lot what your car is for. My old i20 used to have an ASBO system on, which was great for doing the traffic light grand prix and going for a razz with your mates. BUT, it wasn't my daily as I used the van for work at that point in time. Now I'm using the car again for work, I don't think I'd be able to bear having a background drone for miles on end.

But that's one of the good things about your slightly more expensive exhaust systems; the button to allow you to have the vast amounts of sound when the situation calls for it and then a press of it again to get things back tame.

And yes I have to agree with your comments on comparing a tuned VRS diesel to a standard VRS petrol. At the time of buying my VRS tdi, the 230 was the new kid on the block, but I still remember it to feel quicker than I've ever been able to get my VRS.

Thanks for the insight, my car is jack of all trades... my daily/ family car but also my bit of fun for when I’m on my own, so as you say a more expensive system which can be dynamic would definitely be the way forward!

I had a VRS TDi same colour as yours, also remapped, and agree, it's not a particularly fast car. I couldn't get anywhere near 50+ mpg, 45 was a good result.

  • 2 years later...

@MTwedVRS I had been debating doing the same for a while and finally took the plunge going from a Mk3 TDI vRS to a 245 model, in part due to your thread!

I’d been looking out for a Challenge model but I wasn’t keen on 19in wheels due to the roads I travel on, also not all came with the virtual cockpit.

In the end I came across a well specced 245 car that included adaptive cruise, virtual cockpit, canton and keyless entry/start/stop. It looks like it’s been well looked and has recently had a set of Pilot Sports fitted all around.

Averaging 38-42 on my commutes so far, can’t complain at that. The response and quietness over the diesel is like night and day.

No real complaints so far other than me wanting a little more noise, maybe a Miltek resonated cat-back is in order. I’ll also be getting it booked in at my local for brake fluid change and aircon service as neither look to have been done since new.

@MTwedVRS Hello Matt, are you still considering upgrading the exhaust if you haven’t done so already?

Like you I’m struggling to find any videos/people who have opted for the resonated Miltek cat-back. The OPF/GPF cars are quiet however I don’t want it to be obnoxious nor do I want any drone and at £1200+ I’d want it to be spot on.
