Fan running on

Featured Replies

On Saturday I did a slow (60 - 65mph on cruise) long haul, 570 miles, which ended with the usual 15 minutes in stop start traffic around the M25, back to “speed” for 10 miles or so then a few miles local driving to home.  Stopped in the drive and the front end was radiating heat and the fan ran on for a good few minutes.  The temp was ~25c so reasonably warm but not hot, oil temp was showing at 99c.

Is this fan running on normal in what wasn’t exactly demanding driving/extreme conditions?

Thoughts?

Cheers, that sounds spot on.  I hadn’t thought of DPF regen. 👍

Sorry to put a dampener on this.

The dpf regeneration is 'fuelled' by extra diesel being pumped into the engine to raise the temperature. By turning off the engine you have interrupted the regeneration. The extra diesel then washes down the bores diluting the engine oil.  It is important therefore to check your oil level more often. If regenerations are interrupted too often the dipstick shows a higher oil level.

The Daily Telegraph motoring correspondent has a lot of stuff on this.  Here are two for starters.

Not too worried re oil dilution, though will check the oil level more often than the once in a while, if I remember.  This was the first time I’ve seen this, on this car, why don’t manufacturers put a little “regen in progress, keep driving if possible” light up?  Most of my trips are long haul, not stop/start, so hopefully less of an issue.

On the plus side, did 58.4mpg (actual, not trip comp) and the AdBlue range has finally moved, dropping from 5500 miles from new to 5000 miles after 1500 miles. 👍

Would appear to be normal, in my Driver's manual this is covered on page 199.  It may run for up to 10 minutes.

On my over 100,000 mile diesel Yeti, post fix and post the free (£1000) replacement of of the EGR under the 'Trust building measure' regens became more frequent. I think this was because of fewer 'passive regens' and more 'active' ones were taking place as a result of the fix.

If arriving home I turned off and the fan was running then I would immediately take the car for a run in 3rd and 4th gear to clear the excess diesel.

When the tbm expired I got rid of the car.  My driving pattern was changing and I no longer trusted the car.

It is my view that diesel particulate filters are a flawed technology and anyone buying a diesel (especially on a lease with a lowish annual mileage stated) would have a good case for miss selling.

When I was looking to replace the Yeti I was considering a diesel LR Discovery Sport.  At least the salesman was honest. He told me that I would need to do a 25 mile dual carriageway run "at least once a week".

The local BMW dealer told me it wouldn't be a problem on a new X1, yeah right!

I ended up with a petrol Karoq dsg and not looked back.

Sounds like a good plan.👍
