Known as "calibrated" wrist. :D .

Most of the dealerships I have worked at have always been very conscious of a new sump plug and torque to 30 Nm, then mark to show torqued (and rightly so). On one of my less than co operative days I had a 19 mm spanner in my hand and thought that will do. My apprentice quite rightly pointed out that I was not doing it correctly. I assured him I had an age old fracture in my right forearm that opened up at 30 Nm, so when I could feel a sharp pain in my arm, then I knew it was tight. He was amazed and commented how handy that was. :doh:

  • It's not for tightening, it's for loosening.   You should tighten a new filter using your hand otherwise it can be too tight and leak.

The Aspergers meat robots aren't going to like the absence of numbers in those instructions, you're stoking a controversy that could result in a full-blown interwebs tantrum with extensive virtual keyboard heel-drumming!

Bellend.

I didn't actually mean you, you don't mind rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty, it was a jibe at those who don't but who pad their post count by starting stupid semantic arguments about matters of which they have little or no practical experience.

But you're right, I am a bellend nonetheless. :biggrin:

Appreciated, but I am vey Aspergersish.

Funnily enough I was just trying to find a picture of a genuine filter with the 20Nm on it, and failed thus far.  Wonder if I made that up?! I've got one at home I'll look at this evening which should confirm my insanity or otherwise.

Neurodiversity makes the world a more interesting place, however my observation is more to do with the futility of a desire for certainty in a probabilistic universe.

Drilling down to the planck scale when splitting hairs is utterly pointless and guarantees disappointment for all, without naming names there are people like that on here and they have very large post counts inversely proportionate to their useful contribution.

Neurodiversity

Not seen that word before, but I like it. Possibly safer sounding than Psychodiversity? :D

I have a form of high functioning autism that doesn't quite fit in a specific box. I do however have an natural inclination to want to solve problems and repair things. Limited experience in the field. Only started working on cars 5 years ago. First out of necessity. Then as a hobby. Currently enlisted in a work learn program as i combine school and work together to become a automotive technician. I gave up a well paying job as an electromechanical engineer to do so. Now 1 year of experience in an actual shop and i love it. Before all of that i used to work in IT as a programmer. And i the future ill most likely end up combining all of the above and end up working on electric vehicles.

HFA = Aspergers.

It got renamed, I too enjoy any activity that involves the extensive use of my opposable thumbs and do not enjoy activities that don't, like IT guff, I leave that to the primates in the office.

Me too. I struggle with social stuff.

My original diagnosis is

PDD/NOS and asperger syndrome

If you were to get that diagnosis today they would most likely call it ASS. As there isn't a specific diagnosis when it comes to all the forms of autism. I just prefer the HFA acronym for obvious reasons. And because the term aspergers has a lot of stigma attached to it thanks to misinformation in the media. And it commonly being used as an insult.

ASD surely?

ASS. Autistic Spectrum Syndrome.

Ok, ASS it is, I prefer ASS anyway.

Techie- I use a 36 mm socket on my 1.4 TDI  to remove filter and also tighten by hand, looking for leaks afterwards. But I also run a bit of sacrificial oil( about half a pint) down the filter into the  sump to remove any remaining muck left in the sump, before refitting a new sump plug and refitting a new filter- but only hand tight.

XSR- I got into working on my own vehicles over 50 years ago. I lived well beyond the reach of the emergency services, so it was either wait a long time for a patrol or gt a manual + a set of tools and learn it yourself. Fortunately I was employed in those days by the GPO Telephones and in those days we were expected to service our vehicles. (with help from the RMT staff, where locally the foreman encouraged us to learn about mechanics  ). If we showed any enthusiasm to work on our own cars, then the foreman would help us out.

My training taught me to first find out how things worked. Then when they stopped working, work out what has failed. There is no difference between IT/electronics/ AUTOMOTIVE workings. It's

1- learn/work out how it's supposed to work,

2- find out what is not working.,

3- work out what the fault is.

As I remembered:

But when you think about, it's more in the interests of MHO that these filters never come undone accidentally/unintentionally than it is to make things easier for the technician/person who has to remove them at the end of their life. So it makes sense for them to err on the side of tight, but known tightness.

These filters are clearly designed to be used by the official dealer technicians. The fact it has a 'nut' on the end for the torque wrench and the actual torque setting is written on the filter. This also means you can easily put an air wrench on it for removal. Think MHO figured that in a professional setting a technician would have access to the proper tools required to tighten and undo them.

It's the standard genuine filter for the 16-valve petrols.

Of that i had no doubt :D

@Xsr

The filters like that are clearly suitable to be used by anyone doing an oil filter change.

The Mahle filters i get at my local motor factors are the same as the Black VW Group ones as shown.

The Silver VW Group ones are not the same as that.

I was debating it from a design standpoint. That it shows it was designed with an idea in mind. Not questioning who actually uses it.

I guess the 8v filter lacks that feature then? So Skoda's general instructions couldn't specify a torque.
