Start-stop activating before vehicle stopped

Featured Replies

Hi,

Does anyone know if it’s normal for the engine to sometimes cut out before you’ve come to a complete halt?

My petrol automatic will sometimes cut the engine when slowing down for tall speed humps or rolling up to a car park barrier.

(This is with stop-start activated or should I say forgotten to turn it off.....)

Thanks

Yes. Completely normal.

Thanks, couldn’t find anything in the manual about it, I’m sure I’ve had it do it to me when slowed down to pull out into traffic as well.

Considering all the safety kit and systems fitted to today’s cars, they fit a dangerous feature, just to chase lower co2 figures. Ironic really.

If you don’t come to a complete stop it restarts as soon as you lift your foot off the brake.

Your foot is not on the brake if you just lift off the accelerator as you coast up to speed humps or rolling up to a car park barrier etc.

You just have to remember to switch the Stop / Start off, or whack up the heater / cooler control, or touch the accelerator or brake.

The Stop / start & lowering of emissions under WLTP testing has meant the VED's are lower or the BIK,

so if a post it note is required to remind to put the S/S off that is much cheapness.

At the little lads footy training on Saturday we were walking behind a 2019 VW Tiguan as it crawled along the access road around the pitch whilst waiting for pedestrians to realise and stand aside. The stop start was kicking in and out every couple of seconds. It went on for a good few minutes.

All it did was remind me how grateful I was that there is a button to turn it off. Manufacturers will no doubt remove the button eventually.

Not sure if some manufacturers have or will integrate the forward facing camera and sat nav into the stop-start activation. Maybe they could ask OFQUAL if they have an algorithm that would work......

Maybe manual gearbox cars are different but the stop start on my car has never operated just by taking my foot off the throttle. It only happens under braking: either once I’ve come to a complete stop or sometimes if I’m braking gently and almost at a complete stop.

If I just lift off the accelerator, my car will just crawl along at idle like a traditional auto.

The Kodiaq uses the forwards radar to help work out when to restart the engine, which is clever but sometimes a little too eager. Particularly if you’re in a queue behind the kind of driver that feels the need to move forward an inch at a time rather than wait for the traffic to move properly.

What they are doing with the 1.0 & 1.5 TSI's with a DSG is giving Mild Hybrids only and the cars will start off and crawl along using electricity.

With larger capacity Petrol engines it will be plug in to be able to play.

@Trilby

I have not driven any manuals for 45 years now other than with a servo clutch.
