VRS 19s to 18s or vice-versa

Featured Replies

Hi all,

put a deposit down on a VRS today, very happy with the spec apart from the 19 xtreme alloys which aren't to my taste personally.

Has anyone gone from the 19s to 18 gemninis, or vice-versa? If so, how did you find it and what differences did it make?

Anyone thinking of swapping from 18s to 19s then let me know haha.

Really looking forward to picking the car up but I have to work out how to get to Southampton to Brockenhurst on a bank holiday Monday when the trains aren't running 🙂 At least I can get to Southampton from South Wales I suppose!

So can’t help with the difference part.

But; what state are the 19’s in? Are they silver, anthracite or black? Tyre condition?  Got a link to the car in question (Autotrader).

Hi, they are being refurbished so should be in very good condition. I've attached a pic above showing the colour and why they are being refurbished! Not sure on the tyre condition as yet but am told will have at least 3mm as per the Skoda Approved terms.

Thanks. The black Xtremes are what I am interested in, so I’ll not take up any more of your time 🙂

Might be worth trying them for a bit yourself, see how you get on with them?

It's probably not the quickest way to get there but I think the Bluestar 6 will get you from Central to (I'm guessing) Meadens in Brockenhurst.

I'll certainly give them a go but, if I'm honest, I'm not a huge fan of the design. I might learn to love them.

Ahhh yes, hadn't thought of the bus, thanks. Just looked and it's about 50 minutes and only runs every 2 hours but it at least runs on a bank holiday!

You're quite right, the car is from Meadens. Have you used them? They seem very professional so far.

It's where mine came from and have used them for servicing and more recently some warranty work as they're most local to me.

They're generally good I find, reasonably flexible and communicative. Some of the warranty stuff needed a bit of pushing but I don't think that's a rarity amongst Skoda dealers.

Get them to refurb them in full anthracite without the diamond cut face.  They look so much better.

Imo of course

Think that ship has sailed sadly.

Does anyone know what 19s this VRS is wearing? I like the design of these.

They’re the same as yours, the Xtremes but refurbed all anthracite with no machine cut finishing.

Wow, they look like completely different wheels. And so much better in my opinion.

Good to know this is an option.

I could see anthracite working quite well on a meteor grey estate with the black pack. Though the rear disc to rim ratio would haunt me forever 😂

Is it true the Xtremes are lighter than the Geminis? And has anyone verified that?

Judging by these posts, I don't think it is:

I know it's an old post, but thought I'd add in what I found recently anyway.

I weighed my 18" Gemini with a Goodyear F1 Assym 3 on it. It was 21.5kg. I had a tyre (same tyre, no wheel) sitting around waiting to get put on, so I weighed it and it was 9.5kg.

So I deduce the 18" Gemini rim weighs 12kg by itself. Not as heavy as I thought!

Hi everyone,

I know a good few of you are wanting a weight to these wheels, well I've just spoken to Dan at Bickerton (Skoda Parts) and asked him, how much these wheels weigh? Whilst I was on the phone he had one in stock, and weighed it for me. He tells me that the wheel on its own out of the box is 13.3Kgs. He even weighed the box as well at 1.2Kgs, therefore a transport/postage weight would be 14.5Kgs per wheel. Hope this helps

Assuming correct, that would suggest 12kg vs 13.3kg for 18" Gemini vs 19" Xtreme

Great sluething, thank you!

Not much in it, to be fair.

When I owned my Vrs245 weighed the 19" Xtreme plus the 225/35 tyre (Pirelli) they came with at work on digital electronic scales and they are 22.5kg each. The 18" aftermarket alloys and 225/40 tyres I used in the winter weighed 21.9kg for comparison.

Interesting info, thanks.

As luck would have it a set of 18 Geminis have come up locally and I've agreed a price.

They're silver and need a refurb. If I like the Xtremes I'll either keep the Geminis for winter wheels or move them on.

So just to confirm, standard fit 18s fit over the front brakes of a 245? I have a set of 18s from seat I use as summers currently that might get used on a 245 as winters. I read a review that says the front discs on a 245 were to big for 18 which was a contributing factor for 19s. But then some online data suggests 18 is a standard option. Confused much.

18" Clear the calipers (THE DISCS ARE NOT THE ISSUE) just fine as my winters were 7.5J x 18" with 225/40R18 TYRES.

When the 245 was released in 2017 there was a lot of nonsense in the press about the standard 19s being necessary due to the MASSIVE BRAKES that were the same 340mm brakes as the 230 had, it was only the rears that got bigger on the 245 and they're not big enough to need 19s by any stretch.

Standard motoring press nonsense.

Thanks both. And @shyVRS245 I get it's caliper that gets in the way (or not in this case) but the disc size does have a big impact on caliper position hence the terminology used. Sorry if it touched a nerve 😉
