Inaccurate speed limit readout?

Featured Replies

Has anyone experienced this problem? Our 18 registered petrol Kodiak DSG with all the bells and whistles has been excellent up to now. The local Speed Limit readout has become inaccurate on a number of important roads. Reading 60mph when it is 40mph. Local dealer unable to correct this fault which it said has occured on a new Karok. They did not say how that was resolved pointing out that this data is provided by third party, which I believe is "Here", the consortium of European car manufacturers Sat Nav data provider. Eager to find a solution without changing brand.

Hi, I would suggest updating your GPS - unless the speed limits on those roads has changed recently, it sounds like something is incorrect in the stored data. When was your GPS last updated? Does your vehicle have traffic sign recognition?

Not really had any problem with it except for a warning that it didn’t know the speed limit crossing the new Forth bridge.

First thing to try is as said, make sure the maps are the latest. If not update them. The issue is it's not a fault as such, just that the information in the database hasn't caught up. That will always be an issue, for  example a limit near us changed the middle of last week so  there's no chance the change will be even in the most up to date database.

@Manc-Fletch

The Queensferry Crossing operators are not going to know the speed limit and when it is the 70 mph or they are putting a restricted speed on.

PS

Forth Bridge /rail.

Then the Forth Road bridge.

New Bridge is the 'Queensferry Crossing' There used to be a ferry crossing.

Trust Scotland to make things silly by the names.

Thanks to you all. I have been slow to pick up on your messages (other time demands). I have also responded via a post about start/stop switch replacement because I had included my sat nav issue in my post about that. I will keep strict topic separation (social distancing) in future!

To answer points raised. Like you I assumed the mapping data had been corrupted in some unknown way because about these parts speed limits have not changed. I visited the official Skoda site for map updates. I followed requirements to the letter. The in car updating followed the process required and the 2020/2021 update was acknowledge by showing reference numbers etc. and detail of it's map contents. This made absolutely no difference. The speed limit readout has, if anything, become more erratic and inaccurate. It switches speed limit readouts mid route (open road) where the limit is constant. Not at all helpful. At times disconcerting. I am now thinking the Infotainment unit may be at fault, otherwise what else? The problem is presumably not general so it may be Dealers are not fully aware or know how to correct it. They do tend to wait for official notification. If it is a low incidence problem I am unsure about effective dealer feedback to HQ. I have followed another avenue by messaging Skoda Customer Support via their web site seeking a way forward. I have received neither confirmation of my message nor reply. Not exactly encouraging. I am pursuing another route via "Here" the map supplier to VAG Group and other manufacturers of that consortium. "Here" seem to encourage correction to mapping data where it is wrong. It will be interesting to know their opinion.

Odd, I hope you get resolution soon.

It's certainly going to be a tricky one to get resolved.

I would have expected that if the data is correct (and even if the old set had become corrupted, the update should have properly replaced it) then essentially the system should simply be looking at your current location and reading the data. However I suppose it's possible that the data is done in sections, and if the section in question hasn't changed since the existing version, the update won't replace the section that has become corrupted. All supposition of course.

Another extremely unlikely possibility is that there's an issue with the GPS signal. But you'd be able to  tell if that were the case, because the map would also show the wrong location. I guess that's not true.

The software in these systems is extremely complex, so it's unlikely the dealers themselves will be able to go straight to a fix. Even SUK will need advice unless it's a well known issue, in which case a TPI will have been issued so SUK would be able to advise the dealer. I agree the most likely is either a SW corruption or a database corruption in the main unit (in the glovebox) as that drives the central display directly.

I'd advise trying to get a passenger to take a video of the issue to give to the dealer to help convince SUK there is a problem.

Is it possible to get the dealer to drive a different car down a road which gives the wrong reading and see that the readouts are different?

Hi Strasbourg, do you live anywhere near Wimbledon area ? if so I would be willing to run a comparison run with you sometime. I also have a spare SD navigation card we could try - older maps (not updated recently) but still runs correctly.
