octavia 4x4 turbo clean

Featured Replies

hi, it seems the turbo on my 2005 1.9tdi needs the mr muscle treatment, ive looked online but cant seem to find a tutorial to help.can anyone please put up a link showing how its done, many thanks

Didn't look very far :D

I did mine today, although I have a BKD so it's a bit different.  Lasts about 14  months with my driving (not many miles).

On a vehicle of that age don't waste your time and check the actuator is returning fully to the low boost stop, the spring in mine had broken.  See my post on overboosting.

Mr Muscle? Is this legit? It's not like the whole 'feed a bag of builders sand through your turbo to clear it' prank that used to circulate online?

How would I know if my car needs this? It's 210k, I've had it since Jan 2019 and done nearly 18k in that time. It does feel a bit slower than normal but assumed that was the age of the car and the fact that I drove 130bhp 1.9TDI A4s before this!

No Mr Muscle is legit. I did the same on a Passat 2.0 TDI that my brother in law owned, and it cleared the underboost issue completely.

It dissolves the built up carbon preventing the veins on the turbo moving freely.

Other oven cleaners are available, my weapon of choice is Lidl's own brand, since I moved away from traditional ovens to something better & easier to clean the oven cleaner has been promoted to workshop duties.

Dry beach sand is preferable to smelly builders sand

Yeah Mr Muscle/oven cleaner is a thing. The VNT vanes on the turbo get clogged up with carbon/oily deposits and makes a nice thick gunk that seizes them up after a while, resulting in boost issues. Common sign is the car goes into limp mode due to overboost protection, and trouble code P0234 (i think?) can be read from VCDS.

You feed the oven cleaner into the VNT part of the turbo via a thin tube into the EGR pipe/manifold, and after a while you can work the VNT actuator lever free and restore the full range of movement.

Then take it for a spirited drive and enjoy the feeling of a properly working turbo, until it seizes up again! With my fairly low mileage, it seems to last about 14 months between treatments.
