Superb rear coils

Featured Replies

Do I need a spring compressor to change my Superbs rear coils or are they accessible by removing the bottom shock bolt and lowering the arm on a jack, then jacking back up (arm only) and refitting the shock

Cheers

My mechanic swapped mine out using the jack method

Yes just remove bottom shock bolt. Be aware of the serrated washed that sits between shock and hub. Often drops into lower arm.

The easiest way to remove the springs is to undo the pinch bolt that attaches the wishbone to the hub carrier and drop the wishbone down: the spring falls out easily. Use a trolley jack to support the wishbone while you knock out the pinch bolt, it will give you control as it drops down (I used my motorbike jack, it stays level and gave good control to realign the bolt). Be careful doing the passenger side if you have xenon headlights as it's easy to pop the ride height sensor linkage apart. Pop off the sensor drop link before you let the wishbone down.

The wishbone pinch bolt uses a deformable locknut and the service manual recommends replacing the nut and bolt after removal. P/N's for the nut and bolt are N106 286 02 & N101 064 02.

Correction.

Be careful on the passenger side if you have xenon lights, level sensor is fragile

Cheers guys, doesn't seem too bad to do DIY, doesn't have zenons, it's only a 2013 Greenline, Skoda springs are £120/pair, but looking around at brands like Bilstein maybe if there a saving.

A local garage quoted £140 Inc vat supply and fit the rears but brand unknown

I got some bilstein b3 springs for the rear of mine, bargain of £16 each from demon tweaks.

This is a really easy DIY job; it should only take about 20 minutes/side. This is not advice of course, but it if it were me I'd fit some pattern parts such as the Kayaba ones I just saw on eBay for £49.51/pair.

Good fortune,

... that is an even better price - that is what I would go for and fix the car for £32 :-)

Alan.

PS. Please don't take this as advice, you should always fit genuine VAG replacement parts of course, just like it says in the book...

The wishbone pinch bolt is single use so make sure you have a set of replacement nuts and bolts bought you start.

Good morn Chimaera,

I plagarised some of your words from a thread I wrote some years ago in the above (with a few additions); credit for the method is due to you.

I meant just using the table to look up the right part, it would seem that for your motor car it would be:

(1) 1K0511115BS coil spring
1 paint mark
2 paint marks
rear
blue
yellow

Model data: PR-0YC

Isn't that pretty helpful? I had not tried inputting a VIN; I thought the above was useful enough in itself.

1K0511115BS is a lowered rear spring as it fitted to such cars as the Skoda Octavia MK2 Estate RS and the VW Golf MK6 Estate with sports suspension. You can find that information on the gknautomotive.com online catalogue:

https://web.tecalliance.net/gkn/en/parts/1/86744/detail?query=1K0511115BS&numberType=1&oe=1K0511115BS&groups=188#@brc/search:Search%20by%20any%20number%201K0511115BS;mandator:gkn;query:1K0511115BS;groups:188;brands:1;pf:2;page:0/detail:86744;brandId:1;articleNo:86744;mandator:gkn;query:1K0511115BS;numberType:1;oe:1K0511115BS;groups:188

Scroll down and click "Skoda" or "VW" in the "Vehicle linkage" on the above link to see the cars that are fitted with the 1K0511115BS rear springs as standard.

That is interesting, so it would appear that the OP's 2015 Skoda Superb 1.6td estate already has lowered sports suspension. Can that be right? If it is then the OP's idea of pulling a spring out to measure its uncompressed height is a pretty good one to ensure he gets the right replacement part.

See below, Carlston implies you do have lowered springs, which would seem odd on your motor car. It might be worth taking a spring out (only take 20 minutes) to check as I'm guessing you want to have the standard ride height?

Really? That would solve the mystery. Good information.
