Auto lights issue ?

Featured Replies

e-brakes stopped being hand brakes when they became 'finger brakes',

so the 'parking brake' / 'emergency brake' going on when the car was already held by the 'autohold' does not strain the DSG.

  • 100% agree. If brake lights dazzle you then you shouldn't be driving on roads considering the glare from modern/unadjusted headlights as you've mentioned.

  • There is an option to have the lights turn on earlier or later. Don’t forget the headlights are not just for you to see but for others to see you, just let them do their thing and be safe.

  • Yes you can change under car/ lights menu if I remember correctly.

But does that not put strain on the DSG. Having foot on brake disengages the clutches, with the hand brake on the clutches are slipping.

I'm no expert but you put foot on break to stop, auto hold kicks in so clutch disengages (does it? I don't know), then you just put handbrake on brake lights go off.

It's just a way to turn brake lights off if they bother other's that much when sitting in traffic.

All I know is my Kodiaq sits quite happily with autohold on engine running and drive selected. If I apply handbrake, revs drop and feels as is clutch is slipping.

If I was going to use handbrake every time I stopped I would also be slipping gear selector into neutral and if I was going to be doing that, what’s the point of having DSG with autohold, might as well have manual gearbox and traditional handbrake lol.

'Autohold' is fantastic, the issue is that some vehicles have Brake Lights on with Autohold which is fine with many and the EU regs, but really is not as the UK Highway code advises when sitting square wheels for a while.

My EV happens to not have Autohold, but the 'e-brake' is there to just pull up the switch and when driving away just use the accelerator.

I do cover the brake pedal all the time though, because it moves so easily, just as i do really when driving DSG's with Autohold, unless flicking on the 'e-Brake'.

Why? As you just pointed out, it will happily sit in Drive with the clutch disengaged whilst the brakes are on. Why would you also need to put it in neutral?

(other than if stationary for an extended period of time, in which case you’d be putting it into neutral no matter which brake you were relying on).

I pointed out it sits happily with autohold on with clutches disengaged, with handbrake on engine revs drop and clutch slipping not happy.

I doubt it's slipping the clutch with the parking brake on. Every MQB DSG equipped car with a manual parking brake has actively slipped the clutch in an attempt to crawl with the parking brake engaged, in my experience.

mine 100% does not slip the clutch and try to pull away with the parking brake engaged. The revs sit at idle and do not rise when I flip the parking brake on during auto-hold.

Well with mine if I apply the EHB the revs drop, if I put EHB off I get warning to apply foot brake and car starts to creep forward.

So to satisfy my mechanical sympathy, and for the sake of my DSG I will continue to use the autohold and use the stop/ start of going to be stopped any length of time. Can’t believe how off topic a post on auto lights has gone :)

Not that far off topic.

Some just leave the front lights so the car to decide what is on and when and might have no idea what others see in the way of lights,

DRL's or Side Lights and Dipped beam, or even Fog Lights that come on as they reverse.

Likewise with rear lights, nothing on because there are DRL's to the front, or sidelights on and brake lights as they brake, and even brake lights on with Autohold functioning or with some cars no brake lights on when stationary.

Not really 'Simply Clever' to not know what is what and when.
