vRS.....some questions

Featured Replies

Lads,

I new here........test drove a vRS a week or so ago and am smitten. It was a breif spin and I had a quick nosey around the cabin but I have some questions which you guys could answer for me...........:) (byt the way I'm in Ireland so not sure if the Irish spec vRS is the same ........probably not as we always get shafted on spec here:confused: )

1) Does the standard stereo have a front/ rear fade as I couldn't find it?

2) Standard stereo sounded poor to me, is it crap or was it my imagination?

3) How many speakers on standard stereo? I saw 1 in each door panel in rear and a tweeter in the fronts but are there more than 4?

4) What are these like on fuel? I'm driving a 2003 2.0l and getting 23mpg as I have a very heavy right boot...........will the vRS be sub 20's?

5) What are the service intervals?

6) Does the car have Xenons or are they an option? I assume the headlamp washers only come with the Xenons?

7) Has anyone remapped there new vRS and if so with what result? I sent a mail off to a company over here regarding the remap, he's claiming +40hp and +50 torque............. is this feasable / sustainable without either wrecking my internals or playing havoc with mpg?

8) What are the bad points / pitfalls with the new vRS, what should a first time buyer be aware of?

Thanks in advance,

[ he waits patiently]

Welcome!

I have a 04 RS (Mark 1) so I wont be much good to you. If you send "GAFF" a PM he will be able to tell you all about the new RS. He's in Dublin area, and is as sound as they come.... but he's a bit slow in a racing kart!!

1) Does the standard stereo have a front/ rear fade as I couldn't find it? I presume so

2) Standard stereo sounded poor to me, is it crap or was it my imagination? It's infinately better than the mark 1 RS

3) How many speakers on standard stereo? I saw 1 in each door panel in rear and a tweeter in the fronts but are there more than 4? I think the brochure says 8. There is an upgrade available to 12 speakers with a mp3 compatible HU, but it's around €500

4) What are these like on fuel? I'm driving a 2003 2.0l and getting 23mpg as I have a very heavy right boot...........will the vRS be sub 20's? I average 37mpg in my mark 1, and I hear the mark 2 is slightly thirstier, but unless your feet are made of lead, or you live on the M50, you should get around 30

5) What are the service intervals? Fixed and variable servicing: Fixed is either 10 or 12k miles AFIK. Variable - the car tells you when you need a service

6) Does the car have Xenons or are they an option? I assume the headlamp washers only come with the Xenons? Zenons are a €900 option approx

7) Has anyone remapped there new vRS and if so with what result? I sent a mail off to a company over here regarding the remap, he's claiming +40hp and +50 torque............. is this feasable / sustainable without either wrecking my internals or playing havoc with mpg? There are a few companies that I would not bring it near for a remap. Without crossing the water to Jabba, I recommend Westward Engineering in Enfield. They do REVO. Not sure what the story is with the 2.0 TFSi but they are popular for the 1.8T

8) What are the bad points / pitfalls with the new vRS, what should a first time buyer be aware of? Try searching for "new ottavia vRS" in the search bar

By the way.... welcome to Briskoda!

Briefly,

1) Yes. It has left/right balance too.

2) It's not that bad with CDs or radio once you set it up properly and I enjoy good quality hifi and music. It needs a few hours of usage to get the amp and speakers run in. I'm planning to change it in the next few months so I can access compressed digital music.

3) Eight speakers. A tweeter and mid/bass driver in each door. The tweeters are up by the door handles.

4) The economy should be on par with what you are used to, possibly better. Some people have reported low twenty's but most of us are getting at least 30mpg or more during the run in period and when not thrashing it.

5) The variable servicing implies anything up to 20,000 miles/2 years. I don't think we have anybody on here who has done even 10,000 miles in their new Octavia vRS so I don't know for sure. Variable servicing usually means a slightly longer period between services and use of long life oil.

6) Xenons are an option and yes they come with wash wipers.

7) Re-maps and modifications have been hot topics on this forum recently due to their impact on warranty's but I'm sure they are possible.

8) None that a car of this type and expense doesn't have to consider any way - other hot hatch models / running costs etc.

I have UK one and can answer your questions as follows:-

1. Yes it has fader control

2. IMHO it's pretty good and infinately better than than a MkI Octy.

3. Bass/Mids & Tweeters in both front and rear. Gives a pretty good sound IMHO.

4. After 8,000 miles I have averaged 26.4mpg.

5. Variable service intervals, expect the first between 14,000mls to 20,000mls.

6. Xenons an expensive option in the UK.

7. I have heard of a remapped OctyII vRS and those figures are easily attainable with no detrement to fuel economy.

8. None.

Oh an by the way, you will get answers to your thread but it may take a little longer than 50 minutes!!

Good to here from a possible new owner.

I see the guys have cover most of these, just to expand a little,

1) Does the standard stereo have a front/ rear fade as I couldn't find it? Yep, hit the button with the music note.

2) Its better that Mk1 and too be honest you'd really want to like your music to change, I'm happy with it.

3) 4 doors + 4 tweeters = 8 (so they say :) )

4) You should get over 20 unless your really ragging the crap out of it, the great thing is you don't really need to with the torque. On a trip to Mayo I got 35mpg with 5 people, following day got 38mpg with 2 people on a spin. Average 27-28 on back road driving.

5) I got mine put back to fixed, due to short journeys, maybe if I did long distances I would have left it on Variable.

6) Xenons are Options, originally the washers were listed seperately and had to be added on but not they list them together as far as I know (976 Euro), they are legal requirement so must be got. Btw I got them and they are great, not sure about full beams though.

7) There has been posts about companies doing remaps for 2.0 FSI, I'd say it would be some yoke with it.

8) No real major issues yet, about 3k miles on it. I have a rattle in the back which I must get sorted.

Btw where did you test drive and how did you find them ? PM me if you want ;)

Also I have sent you a Private Message :D

but he's a bit slow in a racing kart!!

I'll let you have that one for now, jaysus I can't wait for next karting meet

FYI the Irish Spec is a lot different to the UK spec (its been mentioned on here before). For some starnge reason ours is better (not complaining ;) ).

...............I have a rattle in the back which I must get sorted./QUOTE]

So do I or should I say I did. Found the problem to be rear brake light housing rattling against the glass.

I had a quick look at that but it seems to be coming from the handle for the rear seats, its coming from both sides in the back

Was the light housing moving much ?

I thank you kind sirs and apologise for my impatience:P

GAFF you have PM

I can recommend the BSR remap (Swedish company, check out www.bsrab.se). It churns out 248 hp and 380 Nm torque. The car handles the power very well, and I'm all smiles while driving :D

There are 12 speakers according to the sales brochure. I'm not sure where they are though. I'm currently getting 36mpg after 4500 miles.
