Would you fit 2nd hand brake pads?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive been offered a decent set of pads at a very good price but they have been used on a car already...

would they be ok to fit?

Cheers

They would have to be almost new to even consider it mate.

I wouldn't.

Brakes are the one thing that I never try to save money on. If anything else fails, you dont do anywhere. If your brakes go - you dont stop!

I wouldn't either

I will jump on the bandwagon also... I would never skimp on tyres or brakes.

yeah me neither, he says they're hardly worn etc.. but they are a great pad at a good price even if worn...

So they may need replacing slightly sooner than a brand new pad, doesn't make them unsafe.

No it doesn't but what might do is if the wear is uneven

How much is a set of pads normally? Dont exactly break the bank. Not sure if it's worth the risk.

It is your decision of course - in fact, I've fitted used pads before, but I knew exactly what state they were in ( I'd fitted them and driven only down to essex and back ) and I was going to be the only one to use the car that they went on.

I'm gonna go slightly against the general trend here (as usual  ), and say that, they shouldn't really be a problem, so long as the car they come off doesn't have massive scoring on the discs they should be fine.

Just take it very easy for the first couple of hundred miles so they bed in properly to your discs, obviously check them incase one side of each pair is significantly more worn than the other, and that theres no missing chunks or grooves.

I will agree that brakes are the most important part on your car, so if theres any doubt whatsoever - dont do it.

[edit] just thinking aloud here, I wonder if there is a technical reason why you shouldn't do this on a modern car with all the electronics fitted these days, could it upset them?

If they're in decent condition they'll be fine, don't see the problem. I've had used pads and know others who have. Just take care to bed them in as advised above.

If they are nearly new, you could always flat them back to level without taking many miles off them.Personally though I wouldn't have them, unless the disks they were bedded in on came as well.

As above, I wouldn't.

They'll be bedded into the disks, which will have unique contours due to wear. Fitting the pads to your disks could cause hotspots on the pads/disks and cause your disks to warp.

Pads aren't exactly expensive anyway.

Anyone thought why they're for sale?

With a set of front pads costing about £20 for half decent Ferrodos, I really can't see the point . . . get new ones when you need them.

I read the title as "2nd handbrake pads", talk about confused!

not a chance in hell i would even consider it.. your brakes are the most important feature on the car. Why even risk problems with them?

What are the pads you're considering?
