Towbar fitting

Featured Replies

New to this site and have found it to be very informative.

Can I pick your brains re the the fitting of a towbar to my 2016 190bhp Tdi 4x4 L&K.

According to Skoda it is not possible fit a towbar to a 150 or 190bhp Tdi 4x4 without upgrading the cooling system.  Am i missing something as this is not required on none 4x4's.

Thanks for any advise.

I can’t answer the question, but I guess it would depend on what you are towing - small trailer, or large caravan.

Trying asking some independent towbar specialists.

I have had my 190 4x4 for a couple of months. I wanted a towbar fitted but dealer couldn't get all parts before mid August. Scheduled for fitting on 9/10 but no mention of need to upgrade cooling although I have seen comments made elsewhere. I will not be towing much weight and only over short distances but it will be interesting to see what gets fitted.

Some manufacturers fit an upgraded radiator and oil cooler for the gearbox when a towbar is factory fitted, to allow the vehicle to happily stay inside operating parameters while towing at full capacity.

If you wanted to be sure, you can upgrade the oil cooler quite easily. One of my cars had an oil cooler issue that damaged the gearbox under warranty (Known fault). When the new box was fitted i removed the genuine cooler and fitted an upgraded Mocal unit to avoid the issue happening again.

The engine temp you can keep an eye on from the instrument panel as usual and the fans should keep it within tolerance.

Ive fitted a towbar to my own car, which is 4x4 and have not upgraded any of the other systems, and i don't intend to either.

My dealer fitted a tow bar to my 2016 L&K 190 4x4 When I purchased it in February 2020. No upgrade to the cooling system. Not had a problem

Thanks for the replies.

I assume that as the 4x4 can tow an extra 200kg (2200kg) Skoda are putting belts and braces in place to cover themselves.  The most I will be towing is 1800kg maybe 3 times a year 150 miles.  So I think I should be OK.

Cheers

The additional cooling can be required on non 4x4, my dad was in contact with the parts guy at a local dealer who advised him of this and was able to confirm whether the cooling system was suitable for towing. Apparently there is no logic to the fitting, seems to be luck of the draw.

Hello everyone,

I am currently in the process of fitting a towbar to a Superb 3 Hatchback. The part of removing the rear bumper and fitting the towbar mechanically to the car went pretty smooth.

Now I am focusing in routing the cables to where they should be.

As I know I should remove the left side panel inside the trunk. And here is where I hit the problems.

I can't remove the subwoofer (original one). I can't figure out how it is mounted.

I can't remove the plastic piece which supports the big plate which lifts up together which the tailgate (I don't know how it's called, and english is not my native language)

I also tried to remove the backseat - no sucess. :(

Anyone can help with any indications or something?
I can't find any videos to help...
