Vauxhall Corsa electric 2020 Fault (maybe faults) in first 6 weeks & various over the next 3 years.

Finally after 18 months of trying i have my car booked in for Recall Actions to be carried out which were missed at what Arnold Clark / Vauxhall kept calling what the car first got as a Service,

and yet they never completed that or reset the Service Indicator.

(They still can not decide if it is supposed to be a EVHC @ 8,000 miles then next at 2 years, 16,000 miles later or at 16,000 miles.

That should have been an EVHC (Electric Vehicle Health Check) but it was their booking centre that kept talking about 'Oil changes' and probable why no EV Trained or Qualified Tech was available.

So eventually after Motability hassling me to get a Service as it is overdue i spent 2 hours on the phone with them, Arnold Clark, then the RAC who arranged an Automatic hire car from Europcar.

7 weeks yet before because it is a Recall Slot and not a Service even though it took Arnold Clark's Booking ages to understand a Corsa E is the old models and a Corsa Electric is a Corsa F. As in the Corsa's from 2019 on and this particular one has no engine as not a petrol.

So first confirmation was wrong as booked as a 'Service'  which would be the same crap happening as last time.

Eventually they got it right,  EVHC and Recall's, 2 of.

What is the worst they can do.

Hire car supposedly available at their gaff the night before and available for up to a week and can be extended if needed.

The job start to finish should be half a day max, time will tell.

Still another 2 weeks until my car goes in for it's recall workshop actions and any servicing and maintenance it might be getting.

The coolant level likes to set it's self and that is below MIN.

The car is going as well as it even has and in the past week has out it's self back to Factory Settings a couple of times.

Over the air updates maybe.

It is showing 180 miles range as it did when new and nearly full, and this i suspect is because something has happened to how much the battery is charging to and just now with weather temp at below 20*oC it is getting as good a kWh efficiency it can get without doing a trip with lots of regen possibility.

(the highest it ever has shown is 229 miles which is what the new Corsa-e supposedly is capable of. )

The car has lost 10,000 miles off the odometer and the app.   That might have something to do with the cars battery.

Even the App can not agree with what miles the car has covered.

I like the app with time and date printed on top. So a photo or screenshot is all you need to record the car's state.

The miles off odometer is very dodgy, it should never happen. Gotta be careful with second hand EV from PSA.

@wyx087

I am interested in what their Fully Trained & Qualified EV Technician comes up with when the car is in and plugged in and the Recall Actions are carried out,

Software & the Brakes software or module or whatever.

They should get the correct miles covered showing on the dash and the centre screen and on my phone.

I have a record of miles covered and charging done.

If the car does fail to show the accurate miles covered since the PDI then Stellantis / Vauxhall are going to be in a bit of trouble.

Personally i could not care less, but the DfT / DVSA / DVLA surely will.

As should any Owners, Motability, Fleet Owners / Lease Company, Car Auction, Dealership etc etc.

So waited all this time to get the car in this Week.

2 Recalls which were not done when in for the first EVHC which they called a Service and they never did.

So eventually the RAC are supposed to have a car there the night before from EUROPCAR, courtesy of Motability.

Tomorrow on the phone if i ever get through or a call back i might find out if the have an EV Technician in on Thursday to do the Recall Actions and a 2nd Service or EVHC or whatever.

If the car goes in and the Recall Actions are not done then the car will not be getting collected until they are.    Micky Muppet Road Show with this crowd.

It's a new week tomorrow, and near end of the working week is when EV technician is in? What just shows how much that dealership cares about EV's.....

10 out of 10 this morning for AC & a quick response to my phone call to the Service desk and to the person that dealt with me and who was very reassuring and actually quite knowledgeable.

Very refreshing.

So fingers crossed that all goes as it should 2, car dropped off, 2 different work shop actions done. 2nd service and Recall actions carried out and if any parts like brake pads or even discs are required Motability approve them.   Why would they not !

I received a phone call this morning.

'We see that your car is coming in for a Service and 2 recall actions.'

'It is just that one of the recall actions can take quite a few hours and could you maybe leave the car for more than one day'.

So i said that was really no bother and why a Hire Car should be dropped off with them this afternoon and i have it for up to 7 days as i gather there can be issues with the Recall action.

So if it all comes together the car is heading off into their capable hands later.

I have my Driving Licence Code ready, but no call yet asking for credit card details for charging me for 'Fuel' if i do not fill it up.

What it might be i have no idea but if not an Automatic that will be another of these little things that happen.

Edit, PS.

A Golf TDI DSG.

Maybe off for a wee skoot around the NC500 then...

The Golf is rather good. oil service due in 900 miles. Tyre pressures were correct.

Just a 115ps TDI but shifts in S and the paddles are good but there is not much engine braking.

70 MPG will be easy on back roads 77 mpg average was when i stopped and reset things and tried to get a dash and gauges and radio station and AC and everything else.

There are buttons, far too many, and light touch stuff and touch screen.

Not for me, but comfy and handles well.

Limited to 75 miles a day then an access charge of 35 pence a mile do not going to be going over the miles with it.

Corsa electric still with dealership.

Before servicing the Recall actions were being done.  Software update.

Seemingly it was at 97% and the system crashed. So tomorrow they will try again.

This might be a Robert the Bruce's spider type event.

PS.

EDIT.

Health Check video arrived.

Rear Discs shagged, Pads OK.  They advise replacing.

Front OK need a clean up.  A bit of scoring.   *Actually crap and need more than an Italian Tune Up, or Skimming.*

That is for them To strip & clean.

The car is in for Servicing & Maintenance.

4

Tyres OK.  depth OK.

**Should be Michelin Alpin 6 fitted. ** (Not actually OK, there is a cut front drivers side wall which seems to have been missed.)

They are my tyres though and i will deal with.

So the Tech seems to not know it is a Motability Car

& they will be getting it done and after they tell Motability, not me.

Tells me the Coolant is low, they topped up, ran the car, no visible leaks.  Advice might need to come in again for investigation.

Well it is an Electric car. It is the Heat Pump system, slow drop.  Setting it's own level and if no checks can be done now what are they going to do?

Currently on hold waiting, to tell them to go call Mobility, tell them the rip off price to replace all 4 discs not the just the very scored rears and one front scored disc,

and new pads.

For once they are correct in advice to replace.

No call back, 4 times not actually transferred from reception to service desk, dead lined twice now,

hanging in again.

So this is pretty much Arnold Clark as usual.  Best dealt with early in the morning. or never.

LOL.

I can not download the video.  Maybe later though.

Hopefully they send on to Motability and if not i will be doing.

What a rusty mess of a car underneath, but then it is 2 years past August since First Registered and kept outside in Scotland & driven on salted and gritted roads.

It was build nearly a year before registered and then held up pre transit and during transit because of lockdown.

The brakes need serious servicing and replacing of discs and as for suspension parts they will be interesting to see in 10 months time when in for a MOT.

There is a lot to be said for rear drum brakes on an EV.

EDIT.

PS

So i will knock that on the head until i hear the car is ready to collect.

If the work advised on the Health Check video has not been carried out then i will not be collecting it until done.

If Motability says it was not really required to be done then i will not be collecting it, ever.

Brakes work approved by Motability.  Damn right.  Software update not carried out.  Seemingly Vauxhall's system is down.  That will be chocolate.  So Monday maybe.   150 miles today in Golf.  60 mpg average.  Lane assist very good.  DSG needs in S crawling in traffic. Dies in 1st moving off in D. Annoying.    Stop start is great as is Autohold.    Lane assist very good. Disables in 30 and 40 mph speed limits.

No word from the dealership on my car being ready for collection.

If there is a call before they close it will be tomorrow before i go for it.

I will be taking it for a road test before i hand in the keys for the hire car which is booked until Wednesday.

EDIT.

Tuesday morning.

I called to ask on progress as no word yesterday.

Updates completed and car on ramp having brakes done. Should be ready this afternoon.

So there are new discs on the rear.  Big deal.

Never used the brakes on the way home.

So the car has actually done 35,869 miles.

At 25,000 miles the milometer went back to 12,500 overnight with an update. Then another time near 10,000 just went after the screen blacking for hours.

I find it hard to believe any software update was done successfully.

Odd readings now on the power use.

**Service indicator not reset**  as far as showing on the App that has the wrong miles on the different pages and then the cars miles.

Car not washed even though i was there 1 hour after i was called to say car was ready.

Fuse Cover was on the passenger floor not put back on, glove compartment lid left open, plastic disposable cover left on seat, dirty paper floor cover left and drivers seat fully forward as some short arse had left it.

Waiting on the customer service survey.  I could not be bothered going in to talk with the morons.

Pretty standard from main dealer in my experience. Especially with software issues. All they know is changing mechanical parts at customer's expense.

At very least you got screenwash fluid topped up and new cabin filter? 😅 Pretty much the only reason to take EV for service..... oh and the sandpaper wash.

  • Author

There is a very major affect that followed the Software Update.

Not the being locked out the car twice this morning and needing to use the key out of the fob.

It is the shifter back to B.   In and around town i use D so that i do not spin wheels if accelerating away from lights and for the lighter steering.

S is too quick and the steering is heavy.

In B the car feels dead and the steering is dead heavy, but i do use B to do like one pedal driving, decelerating in town and out driving quickly in D or S.

Like changing down gear.

Today driving in D and moving to B really is like 'One pedal Driving'.

It will bring the car to a stop quicker in a 20 or 30 MPH limit. Just need to then hold on the brake or the e-Brake and move shifter back to D for moving off.

I like it.

Even less braking will be getting done and time will tell how soon that front discs are gubbed and until the rears are grinding again.

I am happy to be back in my car. Total comfort for me .  Simple controls where they should be.

I think the software update could have made some more battery capacity available.

Maybe just spare capacity they had for when there is battery degradation.

I will see if any improvement in range & run the battery low and see how much it takes to recharge.

Today it does look like it was slower charging from 90- 96 %.  I would normally of charged to 98% and quicker.  Maybe that was an issue that the Update was addressing.

Fair review here by him IMO.   A simple upgrade measure is better tyres than ECO Ditch Finders.

As seen here.  Suits the not so slim.....

So i got a call from the Branch Manager.

A nice call with him apologising for my disappointing experience with the Servicing at the branch.

Seemingly there has been discussions regarding what i put in the customer survey.

Things clearly went wrong at various stages from the booking to the collection of the dirty car which was not ready for collection really.

(I am to blame for the dirty car being handed over when it is going in for an inspection, but it was horrible weather and dirty country roads taking the car in.

that is my excuse, normally i hand in clean cars and say do not wash them.)

So someone might have had their ear chewed, and maybe really the staff have been told to get their act together.

Then there is the fact that they have Corsa Electrics as Courtesy Cars and there was no need for all the nonsense with Motability getting the RAC to arrange a Europcar Hire car for 7 days from Perth delivered to Dundee.   (Or RSA the insurers for Motability calling me to see what accident i was in that required them to provide a hire car.)

Now waiting or still waiting on Motability responding to the Survey they sent me & which i responded to, then there is the one that Vauxhall sent to me on the performance of their Dealers and the cars.

Maybe my language was a bit too explicit for them.

My Corsa, or actually Motability Finance's was built about 3 years ago but due to lock down not registered until August 2020.

Lease is up in August but i intend extending that if there is an issue getting a replacement with things i like with this car, or if i order one in the 3 months before the lease is up i am OK waiting and running this car until whenever.

But,

it sounds like the motor is going to drop out when going over the very slightest of bumps, road joints, sleeping policeman etc.

That is the Drop Links that are shagged.  So they need replacing, it already had new rear discs and pads.

The car has not had an easy life, and 205/45 17 XL tyres and hard suspension and a heavy car is not the best of idea.

Anyway, anyone buying one of these at less than 3 years old where they might have failed a MOT and give an indication of work required needs to be aware that expense could be coming their way.

Maybe they will look like a cheap way into an EV, but just take care.

& do not assume because an Ex Mobility car it was well looked after because really Vauxhall Main Dealers or the Techs / fitters can be totally hopeless.

  • 2 weeks later...

Car booked in next Friday morning first thing for an Inspection.

Obviously they need to confirm that the Drop Links are shagged even though a tech said they were 3 weeks ago when he checked the car and i can confirm they are totally gubbed.

It is like the car has no suspension. It is rock hard, it rumbles and knocks and sounds like the motor is going to drop out the front and the battery out of the rear.

So no courtesy car arranged, just an inspection.

I know what is coming when i take it in for an hour to get it looked at.  Once up on the ramp and looked at properly it should be staying with them.

It bl00dy well will be.

So this is a Motability car.

It needs approval to get a repair.  Motability will say it is a warranty job, Vauxhall will disagree.

Not my problem.

So i will be getting a Taxi home, or a lift from the Dealers transport, or a Courtesy car which would be a Corsa Electric which has not been booked so likely not available.

This is the issue.

Vauxhall/ Stellantis cars, Scotland biggest Dealership Group, Electric car, Motability.

........................

The new discs fitted back in September are as one might expect on salted roads and not used that much as the regen does the slowing down.

The e-brake sticks at every release / moving off, and the brakes do grind.  That will be the grit / salt causing the grooves.

EV's with Drums on the rear is Simply Clever...

Arnold Clark Service Centre.   7.30am all open in reception.  Nice as car booked in for 8am.  Car on charger and they started it for me.  So far so good.      But, we will see how this goes.   'Good morning, your car is in for a Recall and a inspection service.'.    No it is in for an inspection of the suspension.   Well seemingly yesterday they find out a little software update is required.   So I ask what that is.  Just a quick update.  What for?    Just a Body Control module.   But last time the car shut down for 4 days.  Nothing like that this time.    The last Software updates made the car worse.   Well the gent on the desk could not give a flying duck.    So I will see how it goes.  I might need to speak to the Manager before I leave.   The one that apologised last time over the staff incompetence.   The one that said they were using the poor performance of the staff as a training example.      They better get it right today.    I asked why the Booking Centre does not know they have Corsa Electric cars.   The guy says they have no idea what places have.  I asked why Arnold Clark have an Innovation Centre that millions has been spent on promoting EV,s  staffed by Geniuses on Products yet the rest of the company are clueless.

Edited by toot

I know EVs are heavy but drop links in 3 years is interesting - although I know you said it had a hard life. I guess I would expect the knocking but it sounds a bit more than that - "rock hard, feeling like no suspension" etc. I don't know anything about EVs and to what extent the suspension is traditional or controlled by electronics (e.g. Body control module)? Good luck with it.

Well after 80 minutes the car was parked outside by the tech, and after 10 minutes i ask the guy on the desk when they are telling me the story and he asks if i want him to go find out.

Doh, like yes, but just go get the manager.  There were a few eyes and ears on us now from the offices with open doors and a couple of customers.

So the manager was very nice and came and sat down with a folder and asked if there was a problem.

I asked if he remembered the last fiasco and the calls and nonsense but them learning from their ba-lls up.

He could not quite understand why there was an issue. The car was in for a Software Update and an inspection.

But it was in for the Inspection, no word of an update.

Off he goes and then comes back to say that someone tried calling a land line number yesterday.  Fair enough, but all calls have been via mobile, somehow they have not that number.

At this time the car is away getting a wash and vacuum which i was asked if i would like.

So anyway when the parts come in they will call me. With that mobile number they do not have.

I asked what the problem was, so he looks in the folder.  Front Drop Links, not the rear.  I said really, i had it on the ramp yesterday and he looked in the folder and yes from and rear drop links.

That car is just like it is running on shortened springs.

Then i go along to the showroom to see the car i arranged to test drive, but after some looking it seemingly was parked were i was at the service centre.

They have Corsa Electric the same as mine and the same age for sale, just above the £20,000 sort of mark.

*Not even with someone elses money or barge pole would be mu advice.*

Off i went to the Arnold Clark Renault & Dacia Dealership next to their Hyundai dealership.

What a breath of fresh air.

I will be back there when their showroom  & Demonstrator Clio e-Tech arrives  but more importantly when the Dacia Jogger Automatic Hybrid arrives.

All the space anyone might ever need and a comfy in and out.

Maybe not that economical but i can extend the Motability lease on the Corsa electric until this time next year or longer, or if electric charging goes too high just put it back,

i have a choice of my old diesel or petrol cars to use so not stuck.

This is what the suspension was like when nearly new.

The springs are just like dead now.

I can't quite work out where the top mount is for the spring in the second picture - it's probably just the angle.

In the first picture one can clearly see the L shaped platform.
