Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI Timing Chain

Featured Replies

So, I've just changed the Timing Chain on my car, It was a bit of a pain, only because I didn't have a offset spanner and there isn't room to get a socket in there (trip to Halfords sorted that)

to stop the crank and cam spinning while undoing these I had someone apply the breaks hard,

Its all back together with 12 chain links between the 2 sprockets as stated in the Haynes, I had to use a gasket glue (Granville high temp black instant gasket) for the Sump! -  as theres no gasket for this car

which i didn't realise takes 24 hrs to cure!! Joke!!

So I'm eagerly waiting till tomorrow to see if I've still got a car!

If all goes well, I'll post a decent step by step right up with photos exactly how its done, as I've struggled to find any decent info, other then a polish video on YouTube.

24hrs!?! joke lol, Doing nothing for my nerves

Oh also garage quoted me £300, multiple garages

chain kit £28.

If all goes well gonna do the water pump next week, looks easy the hardest part will probably be the clips on the pipes (I've seen a tool on amazon £13 like pilers with a bike cable.. should make it easier)

Do it. One of the best tool purchases I've ever made.

It sounds to me like you have no reason to be anxious about the outcome of your work.  :)

hehe thanks mate, i did a Peugeot 106 years ago, and must of been out by one tooth, because it sounded like a gun! (been dreading any timing work ever since)

got to say this was an easier process but I think this engine is probably one of the easiest to do? there so close together and it only links 2 sprockets..

thanks! i did try removing these clips (water pump) with mole grips, but there really isn't room.

if car ok tomorrow I will buy for sure :)

So, I started it up and it started fine, so I didn't mess the timing up, however it still sounds the bloody same, rattling chain sound.. seems like it's coming from that same direction of the new chain.. I give up, least I know it's had a new one, but for it being quiter, it ain't.. unless it's something else making the noise... Can't really see how I would of not done it right, it's like 1 bolt after all..  Nightmare !

I'll try get a video up on YouTube of the noise maybe someone else might have an idea .

  • 2 weeks later...

From what I've heard of mine mate it's normal for these engines I get it sometimes but only once weather starts getting colder in summer nothing lol.

Ah it's all sorted now mate it turned out to be a water pump bearing, although the chain might of been making a noise as well , the car has done 120k and the chain was pretty stretched, quiet as a mouse now, apart from knocking when going over speed bumps ! That's my next job , bushes?? Lol

Mine is on 70k and the chain rattles at idle, so yours will have definitely been rattling. I found that fitting the sound dampening pad on the underside of the bonnet from a vRS model helps to supress the noise coming into the cabin quite a bit. Most of the time I don't notice it now.
