adding amplifier to standard speakers

Featured Replies

Hi all

hope someone can help, was thinking of going the old traditional route of adding an amplifier to stock head unit and speakers. nothing fancy just a bit more oomph.

Was hoping to tap into rear of head unit and take high level outputs into a line output converter into an amp and the back to headunit outputs. I cant see an amplifier under the seats either so hoping this is gonna be an easy one?

otherwise i may just tap into rear speaker outputs through a line out converter and run a small sub

also I have noticed clipping and distortion from the speakers at mild volume levels, and remember someone mentioning its the crossover behind the tweeters causing that. I have an old pair of component speakers from the days, which have a passive crossover, could i just wire in the crossovers and solve this issue?

I just took a quick look at the wiring diagrams for the stock stereo setup.

In the standard setup, the speakers connect directly to the internal amplifier in the head unit through an ISO connector in the quad lock. Each corner gets +/- which is connected to the woofer in the door. The woofer has the crossover built in and the tweeter is connected directly to that in the door.

The optional amplifier takes the 8 speaker lines from the ISO connector and does its thing from there.

Ok thanks, do you know if its just an external soldered on crossover thingy that i can just cut and do away with

No idea. It's not something I've ever felt that bothered about.

Ok no worries thanks

someone must have tackled this?

Crossovers are usually simple affairs so I don't think would cause a clipping sound.  I didn't realise anything more complex was fitted to the standard setup.

Usually best to upgrade amp and speakers together, especially bass speakers. Wire some good speakers to the head unit though to test that is ok.
