MY 21 Amundsen Infotainment system

Featured Replies

Some while ago I was asking about entering favourites in GPS coordinates into the new Sat nav as the instructions dont appear to cover it. After some trial and error I have got a procedure that works for me and in case it is useful to anyone I will outline it below:-

Ignition on/ Press top right Nav button/Navigation/Magnifying and Marker symbol/ Search Box/ Enter Latitude Number-then comma-then space, then Longitude number. If it East then no symbol is nescessary, but if it is West then a minus symbol is required before the Longitude number.

Examples of coordinates which are always required in decimal form:-

(I obtain them from Google Street with option set for decimal degrees).

51.12345, 1.56789 this is for an east location

52.98765, -1.54321 this is for a West location

Then click on the result that appears in the box below

Then click "More"

Then click on yellow star and save as your named choice

When I refer to East and West, it is from the Greenwich meridian which of course is Zero longitude.

Hope that helps someone. The reason I use GPS coordinates a lot is because some times the address is not straight forward and not found, maybe out in a remote part of the country, postcodes arent always accurate enough.

See what you think.

It’s about time you could input the three words that define every small square on the earths surface. I have an app to determine what they are and this is far more use than a postcode in a rural area where one can cover several square miles.

We are all supposed to have this app in case we have an accident so you can tell the emergency services exactly where you are

I've got the Amundsen MIB 3 Infotainment. It took me a while to figure this one out. First of all it's not immediately obvious that the navigation search box (as described by Jelugs above) accepts GPS coordinates at all.  Never mind, just go ahead and type in the coordinates, in Decimal Degree format.

HOWEVER, I discovered that if I didn't input the coordinates to SIX decimal places it gave me strange results eg. location in the North Sea! No idea why.

Google gives you the coordinates to FIVE decimal places when you right click a point on Google Maps. You've got two options. One is to just add a zero to the end of each coordinate (so instead of typing 53.81346 you type 53.813460) enter a space then enter the East/West coordinate in the same way, to SIX decimal places.

Alternatively, you can click on the coordinates when Google shows them in the drop down box and they're automatically copied to Clipboard. You can then paste them into a text app and you'll see the coordinates displayed to FOURTEEN decimal places!! Round down to SIX. :)

Hi,

I agree the search box doe

snt appear at first to accept the coordinates but if you type in the coordinates ( you might need to press on the Hash key to get up the numeric keys) as i described, then it should be ok. I didnt have any issue at all with the numbers of decimal places, in fact i did a new one for a place I hadnt been to before only yesterday and all was OK. It is important to do the comma space business I described in the original post.

Ah!  That might be it then!  I'll try with the comma.  Thanks.
It is quite useful to be able to input GPS coordinates. Post Codes, especially in out of the way places, can be quite haphazard.

Much obliged for your help.

Hi,

yes I had a lot of playing around until I sussed it out. The instructions do work but you must follow them exactly. Not only the comma but the space (and the minus or plus if needed!!!! as well! ) The example shows it exactly but I am sure you have got it ok now. I agree that GPS coordinates are by far the most accurate and I use them all the time

Enjoy your Superb, I am loving my Karoq..first Skoda!

Regards

Thanks for that J

Yes, love the car. My first Skoda too and in Business Grey .  A bit of a jump in technology from my 2003 Avensis !  Business Grey is quite a smart colour in spite of the name.

Just wondered if there was a simple straightforward way to read the GPS coordinates of one's current position off the Amundsen SatNav. Could be useful.

Cheers. Have a good weekend.

Hi again,

I will investigate reading the gps off the Amundsens current position, will let you know

Will do likewise when I get a moment.

Karoq's got some super reviews!

Just a quick thought, if you are using the Skoda Connect app. you can go to the “Car Position” when it’s at home, open up Maps and the exact GPS coordinates are displayed at the bottom of the page.

(I am still working on getting the coordinates from the Amundsen)

Regards

Rather than start a new topic thread, we have just taken delivery of a new Karoq with Amundsen MIB3.

I cannot find a way to put a post code in and then get a street address - just coordinates.

My other Skoda with a Columbus works just fine.

Have I missed something or have Skoda taken a backward step?

Having coordinates plays havoc with trying to identify where you have been in the 'last destinations' list!

I am also following the other thread about the difficulties in updating maps,,,, it seems that only VW have an update for the MIB3 and Skoda are still stuck with the MIB2 process on their portal.

The older MIB1 and MIB2 systems needed you to find the postcode button, and then enter a postcode.

For the MIB3s, I believe you just enter the postcode in the generic input field, and the software will recognise it as a postcode rather than an address.

Agree with CJJE. You have two modes of entry.

1. You start typing in the generic field, either the name of the place, the post code or GPS coordinates and possibilities appear below the entry box. You can touch to select and your choice appears on the map. If you then select "MORE" you get the option to name the location and by touching the open yellow star you can save it to Favourites (the star then goes solid yellow).  If the system identifies the location as off road then it doesn't give you an actual address, just coordinates. But by selecting "MORE" you should be able to give it a name yourself and it should hopefully appear in the recent destinations list as something you can easily recognise.

2. You can click what looks like an envelope with a marker over it, just to the right of the generic entry field. This then opens a screen where you can generate the address from scratch ie country, city, street etc.

Agree it's not the most intuitive SatNav unfortunately, although it functions well enough once you do pick a destination and get underway.

The other issue is because updates are done via an built in SIM card (rather than using an SD card/slot) there is no way I know of to input your own set of POIs such as Speed Cameras.  One work around is to use an app like Waze on your phone and connect it to the Amundsen Infotainment system via Android Auto. Select APP (second button down under NAV) and it appears on the Amundsen screen. It's quite useable.

I read that the C type USB socket is recognised by the Amundsen system and can also be used to update the maps on the internal SD Card. Maybe a USB stick with the POIs on it can be imported? I will have a look over the next days at this approach for POIs.

Interesting how for the 'frequent' or 'favourite' POIs that they are all in German!

I have a Columbus, so similar, but I have not been able to update the maps via the USB-C port. Nothing recognised by the unit.

Cheers Stewart.  The C type USB socket is the only way the Amundsen recognises Android Auto although I can play media files off the other USB A sockets.

Would be an interesting hack if we could import POIs via the USB C socket.

I think it is actually pretty short sighted of Skoda to tie customers hands this way.

Expecting an OTA maps update is crazy - 25GB over mobile?  Also, many people will not have a convenient (or fast enough) wifi hotspot to log the car into either.

Also, the data plans for the Skoda supplied SIM are pretty high for a casual user.

The 'older' system were so much better.... Columbus with 3rd party data sim, updates with SD card - and all this now taken away.

I thought Skoda liked the slogan of 'Simply Clever' - not so clever now I think and also the removal of those little extras such as the removable torch in the boot.

Absolutely agree with you. Seems to be a backward step in many cases. It really bugs me that the manuals supplied - both in hard copy and online are out of date and don't relate to the actual device in my car. Very poor.

The saving grace in the online updates is that I'm pretty sure it only downloads the updates for the region you are travelling in. So your local roads will be up to date, but not all roads across Europe. But that does beg the question about what happens when you go off for a summer touring holiday (covid permitting!). If I tell my satnav to plan a route to Zell am See in Austria (as I did with my Golf two years ago) when  will it pick up the changes on German Autobahns etc??

I have had a play around and yes there appears to be a way to see you coordinates of where you are. I was stationary in a car park and went to the navigation icon and get this (attached) picture screen up and you see at the bottom there are the coordinates. Make sure there is no route planned and you click on the symbol next to the bottom on the left hand side

That's brilliant Jelugs!  Thank you very much for posting.  I've just had a look but as I'm parked outside my home it, naturally, just shows me my address but if I wasn't I'd be getting the coordinates!  Good find.

Hope you have a good Christmas in spite of the circumstances!

I am surprised its not showing the coordinates because you happen to be outside your house,.......do you think it is showing your address in preference to the coordinates because it knows where you are from your database?

Probably.

I suspect it would probably do that for the Home address and for any Favourites in the database.
