Adapting headlights for driving in Europe

Featured Replies

Morning all - long time lurker, first time poster!

I have a question - my handbook says for driving abroad you should apply tape to the marked area of the headlight lens, but my lenses are completely clear - any suggestions? 🤔

You have to negate the kick up on the left. Find a wall and a piece of card or plastic and have a play. Completely flat or horizontal beam pattern is what to aim for.

If i'd be overseas for an extended period of time, i'd bring it to a garage there and let them adjust it to their "MOT" standards.

If its temporary i'd just adjust the beam angle of the reflector to the right (or left if i were to go to places where they drive on the left side of the road)

Picture below is the pattern you should be aiming for.

Most headlights have a beam angle adjuster. You can see the pattern best if you park about 1.5 feet. (0,5 meter) from a wall. (concrete walls of underground parking lots are ideal for this)

Just mark the wall with a piece of tape to make sure you aren't adjusting your pattern up or down.

Its much easier to buy a set of headlight deflectors for your car from ebay, the place to stick them onto the headlight lens is in the package. When you get back simply peel them off.

Tape and wall is what I do on all the cars I took to Europe. You can get desired effect no problem and it cost nothing.
