Sound like shattered glass in rear cabin

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

I have little to no knowledge about cars but I'm slowly learning.

I'm in the market for a used Octavia 1.4TSI SEL

Yesterday I went to see a 2016 model with 18k on the clock

Very Nice! I liked the car a lot.

As i drove away from the garage (test drive) and began to accelerate I noticed a loud sound in the rear cabin that sounded like shattered glass moving in one of the doors! As I changed up gears from 2 to 3 it repeated twice and then was gone for the rest of the test drive.

Please can anyone advise me what this is? Has anyone else experienced this noise?

I've been driving 17 years and It was a weird noise unlike any I ever associated with driving. There was no shattered glass.

Something in the spare tyre well?  Unless you looked in the actual door itself you wouldnt necessarily know if there was glass there or not.  Open the door and pull back and forth and see if you can replicate.  Additionally check the windows match, you may find one had been put through previously so wont match (ie logos, brand)

I checked the windows and they all match

I shook the door back and forth

i checked the car with a fine tooth comb it’s a clean car

apart from the noise

That's strange! Sometimes I hear fuel sloshing around in my fuel tank but I just turn up the stereo

Definately try take out the rear tyre and accessories under the mat in the boot, then go for a drive again.  There is a hidden art of correct fixing in the spare tyre without it rattling.
