Instrument pod

Featured Replies

Morning peeps, this question will sound a bit lame so please bear with me. My '03 MK1’s adjustment button on the instrument pod is faulty and doesn’t work for adjusting the clock etc. It seems to be stuck and won’t respond to any amount of cajoling. A replacement pod seems to be the rout to fix it. My question is this, is the mileage stored in the ecu or in the clocks themselves?

ECU, the clocks are just a display system.

Clocks.

It's stored in the PCM in Km, you can check it using a measuring block in VCDS.

All the trip button does is press one of these two switches when you turn the button either way. Seems odd for that to fail.....

It's worth noting that the immobiliser is in the cluster and is coded to the car, so you can't just bung a used one in without having it coded.

That's probably true, but it doesn't mean that you can just bung another instrument cluster in and it'll sort itself out and display that.

@hutchysrs50; please could you let us know how easy/difficult it is to replace clusters and sort out odo and immo aspects, I seem to remember you being pretty clued up?

Hutchy's last activity is showing as 4th Jan, so he may not be around.

I think the immobiliser is in the ECU (EDC15) in a Mk1 as many of these are advertised with "immobiliser off". In my Mk2 it is in the instruments as I am just about to go down the line of swapping out for a 2nd hand one. Swapping the cluster threw up the immobiliser issue but the fuel level and outside temperature actually worked which was the issue with my current cluster. Hopefully VAG Key Login will allow me to retrieve the PIN of both the new and old clusters then I will use Vagcom.

It's in the cluster on the MK1. Hence the common issue of dodgy immobiliser solder joints on the back of the cluster.

Bottom line for OP then is that it is not a simple swap out as re-programming is required for the immobiliser. It may be a simple matter of the adjustment button being snapped - in the Mk2 it is shaped like a paddle on the end contacting either of the switches as shown in the above photo. Probably worth stripping the console down to review if it's a mechanical issue with a simple fix.

Yep, same on the Mk1.

Thanks for the input folks, much appreciated. I will be removing the locks. This looks relatively simple to have a look at the adjustment button. Are there any videos/tutorials of the console being stripped down?

This video shows how to remove and open the instrument cluster....

Thank you so much for this. When I get the opportunity to have a look I will post my results on this topic. 😎
