Rear Shocks

Featured Replies

Good evening

Started to have sound coming from the rear passenger side, sounds like a bag of spanner’s in the boot, notice it mainly when driving on uneven road surface. I it think maybe my shock?? Please find pics of both shocks

Its simply the foam rubber bump stops which also locate the piston rod covers that need replacing, they are very very cheap and easy to replace.

Normally the noise is the plastic sleeve rattling around but I cannot see them in your photos, are they hangging lower down or has someone previously removed them?

If they have then water & dust ingress may have damaged the shocks, are they still damping correctly?

Thanks for your reply. Plastic Sleeves are still their. They are stiff and certainly not rattling around. When on the motorway I get a lot of swaying at the rear of the car, what I have read is a sign the shocks have gone.

Two points:

1) back end uncertainty can also be caused by worn tyres or tyres at incorrect pressures

2) I can't see any sign of oil mist on the shocks which suggests they are still working OK; once the seals on the shafts start to go oil mists out and the shock performance degrades.

Ok. Tyres are 1 month old on the rear and tyre pressure is as recommended by Skoda.

what could be the sound coming from the rear?? If it isn’t the shocks??

If you've got a spare wheel in the boot, check it's properly bolted in. Had a car where it loosened over time and rattled like mad.

Looking at the less likely possibilities here; firstly, have the rear tyres had enough use to scrub off the silicone preservative (which is definitely slippy in the wet) and secondly, have you checked both tyres are the same type/tread and have been fitted the correct way round (unlikely, I appreciate, but possible).

Also another maybe; have you used a tyre prettier product on the rear tyres?  If so, has any of it gotten onto the tread area?

Going back to the shocks question, it is possible that the shocks are so worn there's no oil left to mist out. Have you done a "wing bounce test" on the rear shocks?

It is the shocks!!!!

The protection sleeves are bouncing up and down and rattling every time the car hits a bump.

Hello guys,

thanks for all your replies, but I have come back from the garage today and found out, it was broken rear anti roll bar, £100 plus vat fitted. Happy days!!!

Dont leave those bump stops as they are though or you may have broken springs to add to your collection.

Yes I will do it this weekend mate. Thanks for all your help

Thanks to everyone on this thread - I had never heard of a 'bump stop' but now I know what those bits are that look like the ones in the picture above!  Will get them replaced.
