Felicia Fuses keep blowing!

Featured Replies

Right, I thought id give an old thread I started a new lease of life. I still, cant stop the fuses blowing in my Felicia. Its the 1.6 enging (dont know if thatll make a difference?). Whats happening is, the fuse controlling my Indicators/reversing lights keeps blowing. Its been happening for over a month now, and i just cant track down whats causing it! It first happened on quite a long drive, that envolved some bumpy roads, i just put it down to co-incidence, but its carried on happening. The first thing i did was to replace all of the indicator bulbs; i thought one might be a bit dodgy but it didnt help. I checked inside the lights for any moisture, but there isnt any, and i checked all of the wiring i can see and cant see any obvious issues. My mate had a poke around, used a multi-metre thing and said there wernt any short/open circuits (i think thats what he said - there wernt any problems there anyway) he also had a fiddle around, and tightned some connections underneath the dash board. Now, i didnt crive it much after this, but took it out for a couple of testdrives and it all seemed good! I even did a pretty long trip in it and it was ok, but then i took someone out in it, and the fuse went - so I thought 'ah, it must be something underneath the passenger seat!' but then they went twice today when i was on my own! I really cant work it out - could someone please help me, i cant afford this many fuses!!!

Cheers in advance....

Hello alex

What size fuse is it that is blowing? What size should it be??

and what current is being drawn when useing the indicators???

Steve.

Its a 15a fuse that keeps going, and that is the correct size fuse for the application... how would i find out what current is being drawn by the indicators?

Cheers....

Alex.

Hi Again,

Have you got a mulimeter?

Then if you have one, you need to connect in series with the circuit, best place to do the checks, is remove the fuse, and read the amps when using the indicators.

the other thing, you mention that the revising lights are on the circuit have you checked those out, and finallyis there any other things on the same fuse?

ps dont forget the 4 way flashers are on the same circuit.

Ive borrowed my mates multimeter, so will try and get that info in a bit.... also when i go and buy some more(!) fuses, i might try changing the reversing light bulbs...

Interestingly, the hazard lights have their own fuse, and still work when the indicator/reversing light fuse blows....

cheers again!

Hi Again,

So that says it is not the indicator circuit, Bulbs can blow fuses but it will only blow it once and then you bulb will be shot, I would poss look at the reversing circuit, check the switch (that will have power to it when the ignition is on)(thats poss on the gearbox under the car)(Poss wet)

But as I said before, take out the fuse, and put the ammeter in there, make sure the meter is more that 15AmpsF/S

Right, the only way I could get any sort of reading, was to put the fuse in, and connect the multi-meter thing to the top of one of the small metal pieces ontop of the fuse (if you get waht i mean!?!)... anyway, with the indicators going on their own, the reversing lights on on their own, or with both together, the reading was always around the 12 (i Think volts but am not that sure, the dial on the front of the multimeter was on the 20 or 200 volt setting) mark.... Have no idea if thats good or bad! Ive tried changing the the reversing light bulbs to see if that helps... and will have a nosey round my haynes manual to see about the reversing lights switch... (if any one with a Felicia knows where it is could you give me a shout?).

Cheers again...

Hi

Seems as if you don't know how to use the meter ?

First of all is it digital or analog?

Hi have sent a private message

Hi there just wandering how this turned out as I am having exactly the same problem and thought that it might have something to do with the towbar electrics in mine?

Cheers, Murdo

If it happens on a bumpy road, the obvious thought to me (as an electrician), is that the cable loom is rubbing somewhere and caused the insulation on one cable to wear away, then when the loom moves during the "bump", the bare cable touches the chassis causing a short circuit and blowing the fuse.

A very difficult fault to rectify as you have no idea WHERE the fault may be in the cable.

Halfords bulbs can also cause problems, they are not very well made and the two coils are often too close together, if the bulb is in use when you go over a bump, it can cause the two coils to fuse together, giving some very strange results and over stressing the fuses.

Hope this helps.

sorry to drag up an old thread, but have recently been having the same issue - the fuse for the indicators/rear brake light kept blowing.

first happened just over a week ago, so replaced the fuse, and all was well for a day, and then it blew twice in about 20 minutes. didn't drive anywhere for a few days, and then, when i did take it out again, managed to blow three fuses in less than ten minutes...

anyhow, after checking all the bulbs, etc. think i have now tracked it down, and (hopefully) fixed it.

the wires to the switch for the brake light (in the front underside of the gearbox) were catching on the metal shield panel (not sure of the proper name for this - the bit under the engine/bumper/radiator) and had worn away some of the insulation, so the wire was very slightly exposed. after patching it all up with copious amounts of insulation tape, took it out for a good run around, and things seem to be o.k. for now.. time will tell for sure, but thought this may be of use to someone.

anyhow, m.o.t. tomorrow, we'll see how that goes.

thats the reversing light switch on gear box

thats the reversing light switch on gear box

sorry - i did indeed mean the reverse light switch.

anyhow, got through the m.o.t. without any real trouble. magic.hopefully it will keep running for another 12 months.

I had the very same issue with numerous 15A indicator fuses blowing. After much tracing through from stalk to fuse panel to loom. It was the Reverse Switch situated on the lower front of the gearbox. The cable from the 2 prong connector has to make quite a tight turn over the rear edge of the front skid pan/shield and vibration had chaffed away the insulation. I separated the 2 wires and individually wrapped with insulation tape, taped the 2 back together and applied a sleeve of split windscreen washer flexible pipe with cable ties.

I would have been at the point of seats out, floor matting up to find indicator related cable if it wasn't for finding the solution on this forum. Thanks .r.
