DPF Issues driving me crazy! is it even an issue? HELP

Featured Replies

Hey Guys

Picked up my Octavia vRS 2.0TDI PD170 2007 the other week, Love it! apart from the pesky Orange DPF light that comes on most days then magically goes away...

Let me try to explain to see if anybody else has had this issue or will know whats going on.

Say I drive 15-20 Miles, relatively short journey, DPF light comes on, Understandable.

I take it on a nice bit of road or motorway to regen, the light stays on regardless... BUT when I get home turn the ignition off and back on it will be gone...

And this will come on the next day, do the same thing, then when I get the car nice and warm and take it for a good motorway run it will stay on, ONLY turning off when I turn the ignition back on and off.

Car has no issues, power is good, no smoke, exhaust feels hot when putting my hand next to it, but I am wondering is the DPF just gone and will go bad soon or could it be a sensor issue, scanned with VCDS, no fault codes regarding DPF issues.

It's on 150k now and is a dreaded PD170 which I have seen are notorius for DPF issues as its an early model.

Do I continue using as it is and just deal with it or will this cause me an issue.

Owner before me said it came on once in her ownership, which was about 17k miles/2 years, so just a tad confused :(

Any help would be great, have got access to VCDS if you guys want me to fetch any data or try anything!

Many thanks!

Brad

I don't think that should be the norm at all.

15 - 20 miles should be enough to regen the DPF unless it is all driving at 30mph, & even then I think it should complete ok.

Does the engine get up to temperature within 5/6 miles & the gauge stay at 90 while the engine is running?

Have you checked for codes with VCDS while the Orange DPF warning is still displayed?

If you are into DIY, I would remove both the Throttle valve & EGR valve & give them a good clean.

Also make sure the plastic gears inside are not damaged or broken.

Check the ash load in the DPF with VCDS.   As above, I suspect the Anti Shudder Valve and EGR will probably caked solid with oily soot.

Also, since it's a PD (engine code BMN) and if it's on the original plastic inlet manifold with inlet flaps, I'd remove that and change it for an alloy one without inlet flaps from a BKD engine.

The inlet flaps stick and break up and can be sucked into the engine with disastrous results.  Also the bushes in the ends of the manifold, where the spindle is mounted, wear and you can get a

slight oil seepage and a loss of boost there.

I previously had a MK5 Golf GT Sport with the BMN engine and at 75K miles, the flaps were broken and stuck and the EGR and ASV were caked.  Cleaning those and replacing the inlet manifold

with a BKD one made a huge difference to the way the car drove and improved the fuel economy significantly.

If you want to replace the manifold the easier way, buy this kit.... https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/ppd170-used-bkd-aluminium-inlet-manifold-conversion-kit.html

If you want to do it more cheaply buy a BKD manifold from a breaker; Wigan VAG Parts are great.  Then you'll need to buy the gasket and bolts.

I'd also try a bottle of Cataclean DPF cleaner in a quarter tank of fuel and give the car an Italian service.

Hey bud!

Gets up to temp perfectly, stays bang on 90, for instance today

Went shopping up the road 2-3 mile, came on which is fine, turned off the car, come back to it afterwards ignition on, it came on but when I got home and turned the ignition off then again it stayed off and has done since 😂 it's such a strange issue

Yeah I could look at the EGR definitely, I've just serviced it too with fresh oil and all new filters, I know it has a manifold from a BKD I believe so it no longer has the plastic swirl flaps which I think is a common mod on these engines

It's just such a strange issue!

Thanks for the message mate

I believe it already has the BKD mod done

But I will probably check EGR or if it comes to it drop the dpf out and see what condition it's in, could it be one of the sensors playing up?

Yes, that looks like a BKD inlet manifold.  As I said, you can check the ash level in the DPF with VCDS.  If it's acceptable then that would point to a sensor.

I owned my '08 Golf for 12 years from new until I sold it recently and it did have an exhaust pressure sensor failure once, several years ago at somewhere around 65K miles.

However, I'm reminded that as well as the CEL it did throw a fault code that showed when scanned on a generic scan tool.

Hey Guys

Does anybody know what sensor I would need to replace on the car to rule it out?

Is there a DPF Sensor or will it just be the Exhaust Pressure Sensor?

Many thanks,

Brad

I recently had the same problem after owning my car (2008 pd170 vRS) for over 3  years (now on 122k) with the dpf light coming on a few times a week and my commute consists of either a 10 mile or 30 mile A road drive each way depending on the day.

after a couple of weeks of this happening on and off it got stuck in limp home mode, and garage diagnosed a blocked dpf past regeneration. I’m finally back on the road after a fairly hefty bill. I hope yours isn’t the same problem 🙁 xx

I've ordered a new DPF just in case :D

Does this mean its working correctly now...
