Fabia vRS Low Coolant Temp

Hello,  my vRS coolant temperature is low, it barely reaches 60 degrees on a test run.  Both thermostats have been replaced but it is still the same.  The local mechanic wants to change the water pump next but wouldn't a failure of that mean running too hot ?  The coolant temp gauge seems accurate because the oil temp only reaches 60 degrees as well.  I am only driving the car at the moment for test drives after garage work.  I would be grateful for any advice, thanks.

I forgot to mention there is no engine management light or fault messages.

Sorry, no idea,

but

There is no way the oil does not get up to the normal operating temp of 92*oC or so after the car has gone over 20 miles even in temps below 10*oC but above freezing.  It might well need 10 miles or more to show 50*oC weather and speed dependent.

How far are the test drives to get the coolant to only showing 60*oC on the gauge?

 

The water pump includes the Supercharger magnetic clutch.

Failure with that usually involves loss of coolant. Sometimes only a small amount.

 Unsure if it would actually give different results as it would probably be reading the same output,  but VCDS should give values, or an OBD2 bluetooth adaptor with Torque on an Android phone or tablet.

 

There is NO WAY your actual engine coolant temperature is 60 degrees after driving the car any distance, your CTS must be toast.

 

Your car does not have two thermostats, it only has one by the way. The garage is mugging you off after dipping your wallet!

Thanks for the answers, I'll try to add a few details.  The latest test drive was thirty miles in 8 degrees C, max water temp 62, put the heater on then it dropped to the stop, max oil temp 65.  I've had a mooch about,  perhaps the mechanic had changed the oil thermostat as well, I'll ask him tomorrow.  Would you be able to tell me what a CTS is ?  

CTS is coolant temperature sensor, there's no such thing as an oil thermostat.

The SSP for the 132kW engine refers to a dual circuit cooling system on page 21 with two thermostats.

 

 

One circuit for the engine, one for the charge cooler, nothing to do with each other. We're talking about engine temperature here.

Two thermostats, so the mechanic wasn't making things up. May not have been barking up the right tree, but probably making honest attempts to fix.

The two circuits are said/shown to be for head and block. I'll post some snapshots tomorrow when on a big screen/keyboard.

 

Ok, I see, nonetheless there is still no possibility that the engine is actually only reaching 60 degrees, there has to be an electronic metering malfunction.

 

The gauge is clearly displaying nonsense, either ignore it or fix it, but there is nothing wrong with the cooling system so stop throwing money at it, your mechanic will cheerfully change every bit of it until you run out of money.

There may also be two coolant temperature sensors. The 'normal' one in the same housing as the thermostats, designated G62 in wiring diagrams/SSP/VCDS; a second one called radiator outlet coolant temperature sensor, designated G83. This one appears to be fitted in the radiator, just above the bottom hose connection, where the fan thermoswitch would normally be.

It would be interesting to compare what it, G83, was reading to what G62 is showing, using VCDS or other scan tool.

That is the same 1.4 TSI / TFSI as the 132-136 kW but from when they were mapped to 125kW.

Hello all,  thanks for all your input,  I'm easily overwhelmed by technical details so can I just check that it might still be the DSG thermostat or might that be one of the two replaced so far?  To be fair to the garage mechanic he might be struggling but he is honest as the day is long, he prefers Mini 1275s and Mk1 Escorts, I've told him he should concentrate on Classics and charge double.

Ask him which ones he's replaced.

I don't know enough about DSG thermostats to know whether your car has one or not.

If he can look at any  live readings of the two temperature sensors with VCDS or similar, you could rapidly establish whether it's a real 60° by comparing the two temperature sensors. Very, very little chance they're both mis-reading.

I always try to update my topics with any solution in case someone else comes by with the same problem.  After the 90 degree plastic thermostat was replaced with no change it was removed and found to be cracked.  On close inspection there was a gob of Radweld (oh dear) on the seat so that when the new thermostat was tightened down it distorted then cracked.  Cleaned up, cooling system flushed, all ok for now until the reason for the Radweld crops up.  Thanks to all responders to this problem.
