Updating Infotainment - a few Qs

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am doing the first update on an Octavia 3 L&K due to excessive lag and random shutdowns of the infotainment.

The map currently installed is ECE 2016. On the update portal http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/

I have found about 7 maps with various combinations of the countries of Europe.

All are number ECE 1, ECE 2 with a month/year and so on.

The software is a large zip file (6GB or more in some cases, 13GB).

Q1 Which do I need (I'm in UK). I assume I need ECE 1 2020

Q2 I am not sure whether I have Amundsen or Columbus. I think it is Amudsen based on info on this site.

I have a small display screen, no CD slot (just 2 SD slots).

Q3 One further Q. Can I use any 32GB SD or do I need the one supplied by Skoda (security chipped?). If so, the Skoda website states to Format the card.

Would it be wise to copy the SD card first?

Q4 Are the updates for mobile devices and radio station logos separate?

Thanks!

The updates via the Skoda website are just maps and radio logos. It won't update the actual software running on the headunit.

You can use any of the maps, it depends how much coverage you want and which countries you care about :)

Feel free to post a picture of your headunit, that'll help people identify it and give better advice...

Pretty sure that's an Amundsen, I think the latest software for that version is 0253. Not sure what changes there are or if it'll help your issues.

Amundsen maps need to be on an original Skoda SD card, despite the Skoda site claiming a 32GB card is required for the Europe wide maps, they will still fit on a 16GB card :)

If you add the picture to this thread, I'm sure Pab will provide a software update if available:

He already provided a link a few weeks ago that I have yet to try. Will Pab's link cover all software eg phone compatibility, maps , radio logos etc. I got put off when Windows warned me of insecure site etc

Here is the update

SW update to:- (Removed)

Yes, on Columbus update guide video, a generic 32gb SD card is shown but on Amundsen the video guide on Skoda update portal it suggests using the original Navigation SD card.

Q What should I do tonight? Use Pab's weblink. Download to HDD then unzip to spare or formatted Skoda Nav SD card (which has first been copied as a backup)?

In the car --> settings there is a 'update software' selectable option to further confuse.

In the sticky for this forum  about Amundsen mib 2 Sasha states that the software update should not be needed as not available to general public.

I am updating as my infotainment is regularly crashing. Probably due to the new mobile phones connecting with the infotainment. Can't say for sure though, might be hardware. This is where Pan kindly stepped in to help. I just want to update without messing things up.

Help appreciated.

The link from Pab is the headunit software including the inbuilt bluetooth and smartlink etc. It does not include maps or radio logos.

If there are stability issues or phone incompatibly, performing this update might help but there is no guarantee as it'll depend what the update is designed to fix. These updates are only suppose to be done by dealers as they have access to the files. However, as you've seen, some updates have been leaked and are now freely available. Obviously there is some risk involved with a software update so if you're not comfortable, you might get a friendly dealer to do it for you. These updates are very infrequent so 0253 might be the last update for your headunit. I'm pretty sure they can be performed with any SD card.

The maps and radio logos are a separate update. These come out more frequently and are designed to be updated by the cars owner which is why you're able to download them directly from the VW and Skoda portals. As you have an Amundsen, you will need to use a Skoda SD card for the maps. The radio logos can go on any SD card.

The radio logos can also be transferred on using a USB stick. Go to media.info website and search for the radio station you want in the search box in the top right and choose the most appropriate one from the search results. Scroll way down the page to the other information section, then click on the link that mentions a vw car radio. Do this for each radio station you want the logo for. Copy all the logos to a USB stick or sd card and plug it into your car radio. Whilst listening to the radio, go onto the options and there will be an option for radio station logos, so you can upload the logo file from the USB stick or sd card to a particular preset. Please note, you are not updating the logo to the frequency or radio station, you are updating the logo for that particular preset (ie preset 1 or preset 2) If there is already a logo on that particular preset, you'll have to remove the old one first by clicking on the option on the radio to remove the logo before choosing the new one.

Thanks. Not too fussed about radio logos, most stations have one displayed already. Useful info.

I will update with Pab's firmware/software first using my own 32gb SD card. To transfer to infotainment do I need  to select the update option within the menu of Amundsen once the updated SD card is inserted?

Thanks

To update the maps no, the Amundsen reads the maps directly from the SD card as it doesn't have internal map storage.

To update the firmware, follow the instructions that pab567 sends out.
