Extended battery disconnection

Featured Replies

Hello, I’m new here, got my Fabia SE TDI 1.6 last February.
Normally I go away during the British winter and have disconnected the battery on my previous car while I’m away. On reading posts on this site it appears this might not be a good idea on my Fabia.

Can someone enlighten me please?

Which posts, and what do they claim?

Sounds like exactly the right thing to do, I would think.

A couple of questions to be asked first, is the battery lead acid or calcium or AGM, just disconnecting the battery and leaving these alone might be the death of the battery if left to long without  some sort of charge going in.

A mate of mine took his battery off to complete some work, before starting work he turned everything off opened the bonnet just on the first release shut all doors waited until all lights etc went out then opened bonnet and disconnected  the battery both terminals,  the car was then left  idle for 2 months but he did keep the battery topped up with a maintenance   charger while working on the car, when he re connected car everything was ok again apart from saved stations on radio   but no issues with alarm or starting car, MK2 Fabia TDI 1.9

During lockdown we used a solar battery charger from a caravan site for £26 and just left the panel in the front of the dashboard and run cables out through door and under bonnet passenger side onto the battery we did not use the car for nearly 2 months but it started right away and was locked with alarm on all that time,  car was left outside on in a car park

Thanks for that. Battery is lead acid, so ok.

Things I have heard or read are that electric windows need reprogramming and the radio/cd player loses its code after a short time (there are no details in my car of any code).

I’m also worried about spurious events whilst I’m away.....the other day both front windows wound all the way open for no apparent reason? I’m sure it wasn’t accidental from the fob as the unlock button has to be depressed with some force and duration for this to happen. (It wasn’t a wet day and the car had been standing for a couple of days).

The only thing about the electric windows that'll need reprogramming is the one touch function, which is just about the easiest thing you could do. Radio will be fine if original factory-fitted one.

No chance of any spurious behaviour of anything electric if battery disconnected. :)

Try to ensure it is fully charged before you disco it, either by longish drive or using a charger.
