Front window issue and fuses?

Featured Replies

On two cold, damp mornings a few months ago, the 2 front electric windows took a while to get going and I put it down to damp getting in somewhere. Read a few posts here and got them going a few times by variously unplugging loom by door hinges (no obvious broken wires) and/or doing a key reset.

That trick soon stopped working.

Happy to buy a door switch or motor/control unit but I notice that there is no power to fuses 46 (window right), 58 (window left) and 68 (air blower, which does however work ok). There is no fuse or connections for a fuse even in position 56 (control unit engine).

So is the no power to the window fuses a symptom of the motor/control unit failure or door switch and how to tell which to replace?

Voltage across battery terminals 12.65V and with engine running 13.85V if memory serves

  • Sponsor

13.85 is rather low, maybe double-check that.

Is it definitely a mk1 Fabia with 6Y in the 7th/8th characters of the VIN?

2007 would sometimes be a mk2.

Thanks, Wino.

Double checked the battery, 12.85V at rest, 13.98 to 14V with engine running, that's with it started seconds before, no running or anything.

There's a 6Y in the middle as well as being described as 6Y22E4 model

We changed the fuses although unblown, the spades did have shiny bits only where they'd been pushed in and lo, there is now power to fuses 46 & 58 but no window operation.

Will have a look in daylight at door switch now there's (supposedly) power to it. Any ideas what pins, etc do what?

Still a bit low on the engine running figure, but not enough to explain any misbehaviour I don't think.

I'll have a look at the relevant wiring diagram for the window-related stuff in a short while.

Pretty sure there's another fuse involved that you haven't mentioned.

Check fuse 11 (5 Amp).

Is the car still damp/leaking or did you fix that?

Fuse 11 OK

As in, it's got power both sides. Sorry can't edit posts

Now that you have power at the main 25A fuses, do the windows open if you turn the key in the drivers door to unlock and keep it held round. And go up again if you lock and hold key in that rotation?

  • Author

Nope, still dead. Tried it as well with a 2nd key in ignition at position 2 which I heard was a possible fix but no joy.

So neither window works off the switches in the driver's door, does the passenger side one work from its switch?

If not it has to be either a broken wire in the door hinge area or a failure of the driver's side window module, I think.

You didn't answer about the dampness status of the cabin?

When you've investigated wiring in the door hinge area have you managed to get the rubber boot to sit nicely against the a-pillar metalwork afterwards?  Easy to create a leak there straight onto unsealed connectors.

Oh, it never was/is damp inside (not noticeably anyway like steamed up after it's been sat for a bit) I only thought at the time that a connection was having to dry out since it worked a couple of miles down the road. Well, it did twice anyway. Not seen any green corrosion on connections anywhere but fuse spades are kinda dull, except where they've been scraped clean on removal/refitting.

Quite chuffed at getting the boot back on nicely with my sausage fingers TBH  and couldn't see any wire ends where the loom gets bent all the time, not had door card off yet but without movement, hoping there probably won't be a break elsewhere.

Long shot but would a 6Q2959801A window motor out of a 2003 Comfort 1.9 TDI work in it as Ambiente is a rebranded Comfort?

  • Sponsor

I think that would only work on a pre-facelift car, though I have no idea what the difference is.

Get the door card off to see the part number on yours, I suspect it'll be 6Y2959802 SK1. Check all the connections for corrosion while you're there.

Aye, will do. Thanks for your help thus far. Yeah been trying to find one of those at a reasonable price already

Local scrappie, or someone breaking a car on here or ebay? Searching by part number certainly throws up some horrendous prices on used units!

So bought a part which was supposed to be compatible but turns out to be a 6Q2 (for Mk1s up to Oct 04 I understand from him now) which had a different multiplug arrangement. I did get the big multiplug to go in (rotated 180 degrees to my original) but smaller multiplug was too big to fit in any of the 3 sockets (only one on mine) and it wasn't just the odd length protrusions stopping it. So that's been sent back.

Having had door to bits, took unit off and it's predictably a 6Y2595802 SK240DDRS which doesn't seem to be available (readily or otherwise) anywhere (see attached).

Another breakers says his 6Y1595802 would work. https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2005-453/9/959-959010/ states this is RH door on a LH drive VW Polo  which the he has confirmed it is off (other numbers on it include VW240PDRS, 400887DHW, all different to mine as are other numbers).

So would this be a safe-ish bet?

RH door on a LHD car would have a slave module rather than a master, I would've thought, so not sure it would work. Do the connectors look like they would all fit?

It's got the visually same multiplug as on mine (see his below). Please God let it be true!

I guess if the price is right it's worth a try.

I tried to make myself a little table of part numbers for pre-and post-facelift mk1 Fabia, Polo 9N and 9N3, but it all got far too complicated too fast for my brain.

I've never looked inside a passenger side module to see what might be different.  I thought the connectors would be, but maybe there's just fewer wires going to the same connectors, or not. I don't feel I'm helping much here, sorry! :blush

That one was £90, then a proper 8Y2959802 job came up for £120 so I thought what the hell, nearly Summer, might want windows to work (it's only been 4 months without windows! Manufactured 2005 though so 2 years older than faulty one. Fingers crossed.

All I needed to do was hold the key in unlock position and lock position to get the one-touch thing to work in driver's door.
