Oil Temperature Guage only showing - - -

Featured Replies

I don't normally look at the oil temperature but I must have accidentally moved the rotary steering wheel knob and it popped up on the display only to show 3 x dashes when the engine was running at normal water temperature. The car is just 13 months old and has just had its first Oil Service at a main dealer so I dont know if the problem has been there from new or whether they have knocked a wire off somewhere while it was with them.

Anybody know where the oil temperature sensor is located on a 1.0 TSI engine and if its possible to see it from just lifting the bonnet or is it well hidden and needs to be on a ramp to see it?

I am not going to take it in to the dealer just to look at this, but will have a look myself if its an easy fix of just a loose wire.

Thanks in adavance for any suggestions.

Oil temp sensor is  (usually) combined with oil level sensor in the sump.

The temperature may just be lagging behind water temp more than usual due to cold ambient, and if you run for a bit longer it'll start showing?

Minimum is 50°C to be shown, I believe.

May not be enabled/displayed if the car is on fixed annual servicing though?

You may be right. It was a relatively short journey and the outside temp was close to zero. I will check it again on the next longer run. Thanks.

Just an update to my original post. The oil temp guage is working OK. On a longer journey today it displays the temperature once it gets to 50 degrees C.
