Fabia Mk1 Gear / transmission oil viscosity and change interval?

Featured Replies

hi guys

can you tell me what is the suggested change interval of the gear oil?

i found everything between 50k and and lifetime so im a bit confused

what is the correct oil? its a bme 1.2l engine

does the G060726A2 is the correct one?

as far as i get it only the 6 speed version in vrs models need the pricy way more expensive one?

does this oem oil is semi or full synthetic?

also what is the correct visosity? 75w80 or 75w90?many opposing info about that everywhere also

i have searched for alternatives since the oem one is pretty rare here

what i found supposedly compatibe so far is the :

Liqui Moly Top Tec MTF 5100 75W -strange that its just 75w no second number..

Motul Gear 300 75W-90

Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80

thanks

You don't need to change the gearbox oil at all, simply top it up until it's full, if you have to put much in then it's got a leak somewhere.

hi.thanks for the reply

i do think that at 170k miles it must be pretty worn

lifetime change seems way too optimistic for me

like the 15-20k oil change intervals.im doing 8k intervals at most

also topping up is also risky because who knows what brand oil it has, topping it up with different one sounds like a bad idea for me

Gearbox oil doesn't get hot or contaminated which is why it doesn't wear out, brand doesn't matter either, changing the oil won't do any harm but it's difficult, expensive and completely unnecessary.

I'm an experienced engineer and no manufacturer recommends gearbox oil changes these days, but if you know better then knock yourself out.

well,on our vauxhall agila the factory recommendation for transmission fuid is every 40k

yes,it does not get contaminated but every oil brakes down.i cant imagine that after 150k and 15 years it can be still as good as new

Yes. It's not very expensive in the UK when bought directly from Skoda dealers, or genuine bottles via ebay etc using that part number. 2 litres required.

Just check aftermarket oils for compatibility with that part number if you want to buy something else.

Do you know where the fill and drain plugs are?

  • Author

well in the uk maybe, but not here :(

as i wrote in the frist post i have found many 75w80 and 75w90 oils marked as compatible with the oem one

i would like to be as close as possible to factory oil because i heard that gearboxes are very sensitive to oils so in the first place i would like to know the factory one is 80 or 90?

or do any of you have experience with any specific aftermarket oil proven be good?

yes i have checked the drain plugs as i saw theres 2 versions available.the spline and the hex one.its the h17 hex

Don't know, all etka says is 75W.

I'll have a look at a bottle for you, but I don't think it says much.

  • Author

thanks

i dont have high hopes, usually factory oils wont say much

Nothing useful on the bottle, as you suspected.

I seem to remember that ETKA suggests different oils for the same gearbox codes on VWs and Skodas. Do you know what your gearbox code is? It will be on build data sticker.

Might be able to get more info by cross-referencing.

This bearing seems to be a weak point in the 02T gearbox design, so an oil change may reduce the wear rate of that item by removing oil with tiny bits of the bearing suspended in it. There is a magnet which should take out such particles but there's probably a minimum size below which the oil hangs on to these contaminants.

Tomorrow I may just get round to stripping the end off an old gearbox that I removed from our Fabia after it started to get noisy. This video shows a guy stripping one down and finding bearing problems: https://youtu.be/OM53XdT56wo

i have found the sticker but which code is the gearbox?

maybe the GSB 9462?

  • Author

well, the end of the driveshaft is a bit covered in oil at the left side of the gearbox which probably indicates that the seal is on its way out but other than that is works fine

what do you think?do i have to change it or its not that urgent?

how difiicult is it?does the gearbox has to be disconnected to change it,or after an oil drain,it can be replaced in its place?

  • Sponsor

GSB is certainly a gearbox code, your car is 2006, right? GSB was used until May 2006 in Fabia.

This is the equivalent ETKA page for 2006 Polo, with different oil part number recommended (item 6A) 6-speed manual transmission - Polo/Derby/Vento-IND(PO) [EUROPA 2006 year] (7zap.com)

Not sure what the difference is, but maybe google can help you find out something.  Doesn't even say 75W next to that part number in ETKA.

Are you talking about the oil or the bearings now?  Bearing change is total strip-down of gearbox as shown in the video.

yes its a 2006 car

yes the site you have linked suggests the G052512A2 instead of the G060726A2

but i havent found any further info what is even the difference :(

  • Author

i think the bearings are fine.im talking about the end gasket where the driveshaft connects to the gearbox.it has some oil int it so im suspecting the gasket is leaking

  • Sponsor

Ah, sorry, I understand.  If it is dripping oil on the road, then it should be changed, but if it is just looking slightly oily, leave it alone.  The left one  (short dirveshaft side) is much easier to access with the gearbox in the car, but both could be possible to change without gearbox removal.  The other side would be very much harder to do, as there is a lot of stuff in the way from every direction.

something like this but mine is way less dirty.its not dripping just oily

Ignore that then.

  • Author

thanks

now the only question remains what is the difference between the G052512A2 and the G060726A2?

i could not find any further info if it is interchangeable with each other

also searched for the G052512A2 and it seems more rare than the other

My google is no more powerful than yours, but do try adding single and double spaces between the G and the rest of the number with the whole lot inside "marks" to pick up all format variations that may have been used in both part numbers.

  • Author

what i found so far is the liqui moly 75w oil has both listed as an alternative

so if i wont find the genuine oil,ill probably go with that

the quantity is less than 2L right?

Edited by Alext

2 litres is specified. You will have to be very patient when draining it (with front of car high) to get it all out, preferably starting with warm oil.

When refilling, expect to find that it seems to overflow before the whole 2 litres has been poured, but if car is level in all directions and you fill it slowly, you should see most of two litres go in.  Common problem is to try to do it with only the front of the car lifted, which will fail.
