New owner few questions

Featured Replies

Just got myself a Mk1 VRS and I am new to this whole diesel thing I normally play with Japanese stuff but needed some comfort and mpg,

the one I have got has been played with and I would like to monitor things like temps and boost etc

is there any gauges like the P3 displays available that the gold owners can get where I could monitor things in a subtle display?

would also like to know the best place to pull vac from for a gauge, it has a EGR delete pipe fitted I have noticed,

I am due some new tyres soon, is there a favoured set up for these or some that don’t work well,

I am looking at playing with it a bit but I don’t want to get carried away as this is my “sensible daily” that I have got because my other projects are all broken.

Ok, you need help.

It's a DIESEL so forget EVERYTHING you thought you knew about engines from your rice burners.

It has a vacuum pump, there is no throttle plate so no manifold vacuum available.

The turbo uses a VNT so boost is constantly being adjusted by the ECU to suit the conditions.

EGR delete means nothing on a diesel, loads fit them and tuners tell tall stories to sell their shiny bits of crap but they don't do anything.

Thankyou for the help, I have a lot to learn and play with,

it’s good fun though

If you want a boost gauge then write 1.8 bar on a post-it note in blue crayon and stick it wherever you like B)

If you want more poke then remap it.

If you want even more poke, you fit a slightly bigger turbo, FMIC and remap it.

If you want yet more poke then you fit an even bigger turbo, 4 bar MAP, a stronger clutch and remap it.

Once you get to about 220BHP you'll need induction and exhaust mods.

Get the picture? it's really nothing like a rice burner whatsoever.

It has already been played with, that’s why I want to be able to monitor things, I want to keep an eye on boost levels as I didn’t do the work and I wasn’t there when it was mapped,

at the moment all I really know is it’s had a 1752 turbo fitted, FMIC, headbolts, hoses and revo tune,

would be nice to keep an eye on things and make sure she is right as she is a high miler

Ok, it has about 220 BHP and is running about 2.2 bar boost, if the clutch doesn't slip then it's already been done, what's high mileage in this case?

It’s around 219000 at the moment but starts perfect and seems to be doing well for it

Just stay on top of scheduled servicing and you'll be ok, I wouldn't throw any more crap at it though or it'll join the ricers in the weeds!

Bluetooth OBD2 and Torque on an Android phone. Real time boost (even though scale denotes vacuum) info is from the ECU so unsure how this relates to actual pressure but a cheap starter. There are other values you can track, some may not work on Fabia. Mine is displayed on my Android head unit with temp as only a blue light in Mk2 cluster that goes out when it is above 45 degrees but no actual value if thermostat is questionable, and voltage. Few more  logs available for the McDonalds car park "meet" such as 0 - 60 etc - which isn't  really a great story in my 1.4 TDI.IMG_20201129_103232.thumb.jpg.b0726dd9e7b8949503d41fdd9c89ed1b.jpgure.

That’s a nice set up, I did similar with a car PC I installed a few years ago, forgot that OBD readers can provide all this information.

I had a Mk3 Cavalier years ago and had a suite of VDO gauges in her - A big clean up was done at our homeplace and the gauges resurfaced .. So it was rude not to fit them to the Fabia .. as can be seen they do carry the correct 23 year old patina ... !!

My car originally came with a cheap an nasty turbo gauge which just dominated the instrument panel for no reason whatsoever .. It was tacky and nasty so I just ditched it and discovered I had warning lights ...!

I work in a calibration department where we have access to all manner of instruments - After a recent upgrade to some of the production line hardware a few instruments were got rid of ! The small square gauge is an SMC ise40a-01-r-x501.. This is actually a pressure switch which can be set to show any of the pressure units you want. I set it for bar naturally. It runs on 8-24v dc so perfect .. I ran a new 6mm SMC pressure hose under the bonnet.

There is a trip point which you can set as well. I set it for 0.75bar. As it gets to 0.70bar it turns orange then red after 0.75bar.

You can also use the secondary set of contacts so you can do whatever you want it to do. It might suit you to wire this feature so that the theme from "Fast and Furious" plays and also your full interior turns red at 0.75bar.... Japanese cars are over hyped, over priced rotboxes.

Me I pay little or no attention to my gauges even though I have them fitted - You will know from feel or noise that sommit is not right !
