Steering gone weird?

Featured Replies

Hi i've got a Fabia VRS, only had it 2 months and the cars only done about 5,000 miles.

Last night, I was out in it and all of a suddern it seemed that the steering gor heavier as if I had a flat tyre, except that I dont.

I've come to work in it and it still feels weird, just 'not right'. I've checked the tyre pressure and both fronts were on 32PSI which I didnt see any problems with (I checked the sticker inside the fuel cover for what the pressure should be but couldnt make head nor tail of it)

Theres no power steering warning light up or anything, is anyone aware of any problems that might cause this (rather vague) problem before I get onto the dealer?

Thanks

Hi, welcome t the site!

If I were you I would get your dealer to check it out. No point in taking risks with tyres.

Quite an integral part of the car really!

Sounds like a problem with the power steering electrics. The PAS on the Fabia is electronic and has a big motor that drives it all.

Hi, i had the same problem yesterday! I turned out to be the foam behind the steering rack. It had stuck to the shaft increasing the effort to turn the wheel.

Have a look just above the pedals, youll have to get down in the footwell. In my case it had ripped a strip of the foam off and wrapped it around the shaft.

It got me worried for a moment! :)

I hope its the same for you.

As per my PM earlier:

My steering felt EXACTLY the same last night!

I pulled into a pub car park half way home and gave all the tyres a kick because I thought I'd got a flat.

I then went to a petol station and checked the pressures... All fine

Got home and had a good look round the tyres and they seem fine also.

However on the way to work this morning, the steering felt normal... No problem at all.

I'm now thinking that it could just be that the tarmac and tyres were warm (it was 27C when I was driving home last night), and maybe it just feels different in the summer!

Let me know what happens anyway :)

Hi; I had a very squirrelly event at a roundabout near a petrol pumps, as if I had slid in some diesel spill....... otherwise driving "like a pensioner" my son's quote, Idid not notice this again. At the service, my A/R Bar had broken! 15k of my miles, 5k of dealer's wife's miles + 4 years old 1.4 mpi. Outer edges of the front tyres were scrubbing off even at the right pressures. My power stearing feels very slightly heavier than before. (A/R Bar replaced in service) Other than a pothole at a broken edge of road, I can't think how this happened. Maybe check yours?

Cheers everyone,

I had it back at the dealers on Friday and they agreed that something wasnt right, although they think it was just pulling to the left quite a bit (they even got the service manager to have a look at it too) so its booked in for Friday to have a thorough going over and see whats going on.

Ill keep this thread updated

Pete

They always pull to the left a bit anyway?

The power steering in SWMBOs 1.4 was sporadically going heavy a few months ago and it turned out to be the power steering rack.

Same symptoms as described in the first post and no lights or anything.

Good job it was changed under warranty.
