Veggie oil

Featured Replies

Opinions please;

When I fill up I usually stick a couple of litres (4 per full tank) of very cheap Aldi veggie oil into the tank, I find this makes the car quieter and it (in my case) stops it smoking.

Thing is ... for one reason or another I forgot to do this for a couple of tank fulls, and when I then put some in yesterday it made the car 'feel' stronger in the mid-range.

Is this possible? Any thoughts?

I assumed you had to actually process the veggie oil before you used it - or is that just used oil??

What's the MPG and fuel cost savings like?

Injectors, valve seats, CAT etc........ ;)

maybe the oil you used was chipped?

Sorry I'll get my coat

Does anyone have a rubber chicken handy ... dear me!!

To answer the above questions;

it's 4 yrs old and well out of warranty,

the local Mr S dealership told me that lots of his customers do the same with no ill effects on their cats or injectors (I use Redex diesel every few months)

no idea how it affects mpg, I do it cos it makes it smoother and quieter ... and it SEEMS to be pulling harder

Sorry, my comment was directed at Hewesy's post - should have made that clearer :o

I get what sounds like similar results using 5% biodiesel in my mineral diesel. The transformation from veggie oil to biodiesel removes the glycerine which can gum up the fuel system, and most of the water which Skoda blames for corrosion of injectors on biofuel cars. I wouldn't put straight veggie oil in mine.

When measured on a rolling road, the addition of biodiesel produced no difference in the engine's output figures.

Cheers for your concern Chris - even if I wanted to I couldn't bring myself to pour oil into the fuel cap:rolleyes: :D

Interesting post bryand, I figured the oil had to be transformed somehow.

I take it you make your own??

I assume you are paying fuel duty to HM Government on the oil you put in?

Does the use of veggie oil not mean you have to change fuel filters more often?

I thought it did. Someone I "heard about" had to change filters in a 405 TD every 3 or 4 thousand miles.... :eek: Obviously I bet filters are cheap enough for a pug, but vag ones for the PD engines are damn expensive to be replacing that often....

That pug was run on 100% veggie oil by the way. In general running it seemed OK

There will be more water in the veg oil and yes it should cause the filter to need changing more often.

I have done a lot of research into this and I am just about to start using V100 Biodiesel about 50/50 with normal Diesel. It is processed with methanol andsodium hydroxide and it conforms to the spec required by VW.

Works out about 90p per litre and the 200 litre drum gets delivered on the 15th

Please let us know how you get on with the 50:50 mix; I'm interested in using higher concentrations, but too chicken to be the first!

. Do you brew your own or buy it in?

Where do you guys get your biodiesel?

Got my last lot from Pure Biodiesel in Stroud, Glos.
